Has anyone had experience with the Institute for Futures Research, University of Stellenbosch, located in South Africa? They are offering a distance learning Masters in Futures Studies. I talked to the coordinator, and she said it's possible to earn the degree entirely via distance, with no required residencies.

At R17,000, which is equivalent to $2,338 if I converted correctly (ZAR, or South Africa Rand to US Dollars), it seems like a good deal.

    Stellenbosch..

Cannot tell you anything about the programme; but can tell you that Stellenbosch is a top South African school, and generally well respected internationally (which is to say, all but most Americans hold them in high regard).

I agree that Stellenbosch is internationally well respected, but it is not AACSB accredited, which is the best one for business schools. Neither is any other South African university for that matter.

I know that you have experience with the schools in SA. Why do you say that "all but most American hold them in high regard"?

    Thanks!

I took this off the the university's site.

The University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) has two international accreditations (EQUIS and AMBA).

    SAfr degrees

    Hi PMBrooks,

It has been my experience that SAfrican degrees are a fine complement to a US degree, but will only rarely stand alone to get you hired at any North American school. Usually, people with "foreign" degrees (read: non-Western) are only hired for US academic positions when considered "exceptionally qualified."

For those pursuing ministry positions -- especially with the old traditional denominations -- only degrees from old traditional schools (no matter how Liberal, expensive, or sub-standard) will do.

Let's be honest.... there is a lot of territorialism, protectionism and down-right arrogance involved in academic (and ministry) job hirings.

No one will ever convince me that SAfrican degrees are second-rate. I would put -- for example -- the BTh from SATS against any BA ministry in the US, and honestly believe the SATS degree is much more demanding and difficult to complete.

When it comes to the North American job market, student (buyer) beware!
