Honestly. I really want to sign up this week for a program. I like troy because I can complete it faster and cheaper than a accounting degree. But I really don't like the applied computer science approach. I worry that it will severly limit my future prospects(I dont want to be 60 get laid off and have to pump gas .. accounting would ensure that didn't happen). I really want to work in business designing software and working as a systems analyst. Can you guys give me honest opinions(yes even if you hate it) about troys program and the challenges I would face if I chose it.

The Bachelor of Science in Applied Computer Science degree offered by Troy University is perfectly fine for preparation in a career as a systems analyst. I reviewed the academic requirements against those of a brick-and-mortar institution, Carleton University, with which I am well-acquainted. As for career progression, many systems analysts move into technical management or project management positions.

If Troy University meets your criteria of completion time and monetary cost, then enroll and earn your degree. The Bachelor of Science in Applied Computer Science offered at Troy University is on par with the Bachelor of Computer Science (General) offered at Carleton University. A graduate degree in IT Management or an MBA would complement the BS(ACS) nicely and there are plenty of low-cost options for graduate degrees.

In case it's not clear, Troy is a brick and mortar institution that also does distance learning. It's a public institution, part of the Alabama state system, and has four campuses there: Troy, Montgomery, Phenix City, and Dothan.

They also have an extensive presence on US military installations, being one of the DoD's education partners.

...and, if it matters, Troy is making quite the effort to increase the value of its brand through football marketing - they're in a second tier conference, but are playing the likes of Florida, Georgia, Arkansas, and Oklahoma State in their non-conference schedule

I did not mean to imply that Troy University is not a brick-and-mortar institution. I will go stand in the corner now.

They should buy the naming rights to the stadium where the Atlanta Falcons play. Call it "Troy University Stadium" similar to what University of Phoenix did. ;)

    Xarix,

You need to do a degree which will not only satisfy the career path but also the heart and soul - if you don't, you'll only regret it.

It's obvious that you really want to attend Troy - and with what Sentinel said about going PM after getting the degree and some experience is also sound advice.

Complementing your BS with a MS or MBA will only create more career opportunities...
