Can dissertation-only degrees be credible? If so, with what parameters?
Ph.D. only? Doctoral level only? Work leading up to degree?

    Any input is greatly appreciated.

I'm not aware of any U.S. universities that have them, but it's the standard way of doing things in the higher education systems of many foreign countries. you want to make sure any university you're considering will be accepted here in the States, but hey, that's true of American schools as well.

    What subject are you thinking?

    Larry, we need more info...

Do you want to teach college? Where do you want to teach? How old are you? What disciplines are of interest? Do you have a small, medium, or large doctoral war chest? Wars cost money, and earning a doctorate is war...

As Steve notes, they are commonplace outside North America, and are commonly called "research doctorates" because one only writes a doctoral thesis. (By the way, they have a habit of mixing up those terms thesis vs. dissertation, which is typically a masters pursuit.)
