    Breaking News! Doctorate!!

SATS is very proud to announce that the Council on Higher Education today announced that we have been accredited for a Doctor of Theology degree. We have been working very hard towards this for a number of years and believe very strongly that it is God's will for us at this strategic moment in history, when the focal point of Christianity appears to be shifting towards Africa. We give Him all the glory.

The next step will be for the Department of Education to issue a Certificate of Registration, which usually takes place in December. This means that the earliest we could begin to run the programme would be January 2008.

The announcement today will be good news too for the more than 100 potential students who have already made enquiries. Should you wish to receive further information about this programme, kindly contact our Postgraduate Registrar, Leschenne Rebuli on [email protected]

Not at all. This is a development that has been under discussion by the distance learning community for some time.

    Hey Haggai,

I see you've finished your DPhil. How much longer with Uzulu?

Also, will you have to defend the DTh? If so, will you travel to SA?

    Thanks.

    Uzulu thesis

    Thanks for asking ...

As things worked out, the 'un-accredited' (St. Alcuin) doctorate kinda 'fed' the 'accredited' Uzulu doctorate. The first definitely helped me to lay a research foundation, but also to work out various things in my puny brain (no small task!). The topics of the two doctoral projects had over-lap.

I'm into the third year of the Uzulu program (doctoral thesis, not dissertation). The "write-up" is complete; Dr. Pitchers and I are working through edits right now. They go on spring break soon. Am thinking I should "get 'er done" next year -- if no major problems arise.

*Know there's been a 'ton' of speculation and query about the SATS doctorate; but this 'info' posting is 'legit.' Hope it helps .... there seem to be a lot of people interested in the DTh program at SATS.

SATS is a fully accredited SAfr school, with quality staff. They exist because so many of the traditional "university" theology faculties have become as Liberal as their Western counter-parts.

The reason I decided to do my doctorate with Uzulu is precisely because of this. If you are looking for a fully accredited, world-class, scholastically challenging school to learn / grow with, I would highly recommend SATS (or Uzulu).

    Best wishes!!

    Hey Haggai,

I've read some very good reports about people's experiences at SATS. I got to examine firsthand some of their material, a "reader" for a theology course when I went on a mission trip to Durban, S.A. last summer. A youth pastor I met was studying there. The reader had select chapters from Erickson and Grudem's systematic theology texts. I think SATS will continue to get better and better. BTW what is the topic for your dissertation at UZULU? Good luck with your writing!

    Thesis title

Uzulu thesis title: Postmodernity: Impact and Implications

A religio-cultural consideration of the postmodern cultural wave, impacting the West and beyond. I have given special effort and attention to addressing some of religio-cultural ways Western, postmodern culture is affecting the Two-Thirds World.

(PS: Pats look to be awful tough this year!!)

Your thesis sounds like something I might enjoy reading. I'm pretty excited about the Pats this year. They aren't going to be real easy to beat.

    Thanks, Haggai.

What is the cost of your program with Uzulu?

    I seem to recall it's under $2,000.

    Thanks.

    Uzulu..

Patsfan... be glad to forward the latest draft to you (personal use only, of course). Send me your e-address; pdf format OK?

    --------------

RoscoeB... about UZ cost... seems like it's been less than that thus far, but I don't know the final tally yet. I am also not sure how many exam and library copies they will require, which by itself can be kind-of expensive.

By comparison, UZ (and SATS) are still excellent values for the money.

If you are in ministry, these remain excellent choices; also good for foreign mission folks.

If you are pursuing a professional career in US academia, best to do another -- and much more expensive -- program. It costs more money to be 'reputable.'

I'm hoping the acceptability of S.A. doctorates changes. I'm seeing more and more S.A. doctorates represented at Baptist seminaries. Perhaps I'm naive but as more and more U.S. theologians with S.A. doctorates are publishing high quality literature, maybe the academic world will have no choice, but to change their views.
