I am looking for mathematics courses offered via distance education, including independent study mode. I have found courses in calculus and differential equations and discrete mathematics. However, it seems courses in abstract algebra and other upper level courses are very difficult to find unless willing to attend on-campus class. Any suggestions?

Hi - I believe that there are a few Australian universities (Charles Sturt, Southern Queensland, New England) that offer Bachelors degree programs in Mathematics. They might allow you to take individual courses without being enrolled in a degree program.

Alas, the only distance learning upper-division calculus classes I could find were MA 322 at Saint Mary of the Woods College www.smwc.edu and MATH 471 at Southwestern Adventist University www.swau.edu .

Try the University of Idaho, Engineering Outreach program. They have a Math/teaching masters that offers lots of upper division math courses. I'm pretty sure you don't have to be formally admitted to their degree program in order to take a class or two.

Here's a link to the courses offered under Univ. Idaho's masters in math/teaching.

    Greetings,

Charter Oak State College (www.cosc.edu, one of the "big three" assessment colleges) offers "Contract Learning" (http://tinyurl.com/2xcjod). Under this program, one draws up a contract that clearly states what will be studied, how it will be studied, and how much college credit will be awarded upon successful completion of the contract (see their pamphlet for details). It's really quite spiffy! <g>

A potential problem is that one needs a suitable mentor (or whatever the correct term is) to oversee and assist one with ones studies. Fortunately for you, there is a Connecticut mathematics professor (Dr. Zabek) who has volunteered to be a mentor for previous math related learning contracts. Perhaps he (or another professor) might be willing to do so again? I think it is certainly something you might want to consider.

The cost, at (AFAIK) $247 out-of-state/$177 in-state per semester hour credit attempted, is hardly insignificant, but it is quite competitive, al the more so when considering what you get in return.

I don't know if these math classes will work, but here is the link. It is to UCLA extension/online. At $505.00 for 4 units, not bad!!!! You do not have to be formally admitted, and you do receive college credit. I took upper level mathematics for Management from them years ago. They offer at least one hundred online extension courses. Here is the link:
