Does anyone have any experience using Moodle, the free, open source course management system? I'm a big fan of open source software and this looks like it might be a great alternative Blackboard and others...

In the last year, our institution has moved from using eCollege to using Moodle exclusively. We are having good success with it.

When I asked this question last March, it produced a bunch of very helpful answers. A search just now actually found them.

Most impressive to me is that the UK's Open University and Canada's Athabasca University (their premier distance learning unviersity) have both switched to Moodle.

Andrew Jackson University uses Moodle. I am an adjunct instructor there and I am very pleased with the program.

Here is a translated news article about the use of moodle in Spain.

"Moodle is virtual surroundings of learning that is in mouth of more and more Spanish professors. A total of 1,300 institutes and universities use it as complement to their actual classes. On world-wide scale, it counts with more than two million users. In three years, this platform of open code has taken the lead of the market of remote learning, e-learning."

From the usability perspective of the instructor and student, what are some the strengths and weaknesses of moodle?

I've had extensive usage of Moodle. Im an adjunct at Central Texas College in Japan. To make my life easier I invested some time in finding a good portal system for my students.

I created 2 complete courses, one Microsoft and the other an "Intro To Computers". It helped that I'm a computer geek also...lol, it wasnt to difficult but a challenge at times. There are some bugs that the latest patch hasnt fixed but its a good package overall.

Many of the web hosting companies have a preinstalled script that makes it simple. Try out 3xi. Its dirt cheap for hosting.
