Does anyone know anything about this school, Charis School of
Divinity? How about the Rev. Michael Commini (who sounds familiar)?

I don't know anything about religious studies and so when I look at their faculty listings and try to see where the instructors earned their degrees I don't see a lot of familiar (school) names. However, I know that doesn't necessarily mean much. At the same time, I've surfed through A LOT of university websites. Everything from Ivy League to pond scum. To me this looks like a sincere startup school. It appears that these people intend to create a full-fledged accredited set of programs (they may be overly ambitious in offering everything from certificate programs to doctoral degrees). Maybe it's all smoke and mirrors. I guess time will tell. The only other thing I can say is that they have the same problem that any startup has . . . "Why should I go to YOUR school when there are other, better known and even accredited programs available?" I'm guessing that sometimes the answer to this is extremely relaxed admission standards (open admission is not such a bad thing) PLUS, extremely generous grading standards. In order to survive as an institution everyone graduates, regardless of the quality of their work. If they're serious about accreditation (like they said they were) then there should be some measurable results within a few years.

I didn't see anything on their website that would cause me any alarm. They openly admit to not being accredited, which is refreshing. That said, there are other schools out there that are priced about the same, or even less, that are accredited. Johnson Bible College is roughly $120 per hour and is regionally accredited. Eugene Bible College is $225 per 3 hour class (4.5 quarter hours) and is nationally accredited through the ABHE. You can't go wrong with either school. I'd think long and hard before spending more on an unproven school than what you'd spend with an established, accredited institution.

I have noted that some people on another board (degreediscussion) seem to have some problems with this school. I am glad there are people that know the history of degree mills and track them as they shift names and locations but that has never been my real interest. As for Charis I am suspending my judgement.
