Yes, the ol' play by play. For those who my be interested. UNISA gave me my student number, but not final confirmation. About a month ago I spoke to the department head via email, he mentioned that with a few U.S. students who recently completed the program, they used supervisors within UNISA and promoters/co-promoters here in the U.S. Gavin
When I was talking with a prospective supervisor at Pretoria, he suggested something similar. I don't think that's unusual. -=Steve=-
One of the things I have noted is that if you track the faculty members of two or three departments over a period of two or three years, you will find a remarkable turnover rate. Whatever else this might mean, it especially means that if you enter a UNISA doctoral program you can anticipate that there will be at least one changeover of your doctoral advisor (promoter). These changes frequently go sour as the new advisor requires this and that. The student feels set back an entire year, etc. etc. leading to dropouts and a bad reputation. Allow a more stabile US advisor and the result will be more successful D Litt et Phil completions and better PR. If you're vying for a US market then you have to deliver a consistent product.
