I am finishing up a Masters of Special Education and I want to teach online if I can. I teach special education for CA public schools. First, are there many openings for online adjuncts in the field of education. Second, would it be wise to obtain a certificate in online teaching to improve my resume? I know University of Maryland University College has a program but they are expensive $580 a unit. Does anybody know about other certificate programs that are cheaper?

    Thanks

Cerro Cosa Online Certificate in Online Teaching

There is also a certificate program with Cerro Cosa Community College in California. It is about 8 courses (all online). There is usually a waiting period as it is very popular. I took it last year.

CC Online Certificate in Online Teaching

    More info at: http://cconline.cerrocoso.edu/faccert/default.htm

Textbooks included the total cost was about $300.

I've been closely following the online adjunct forums and this issue comes up from time to time. The general consensus seems to be that you don't need an online teaching certificate, nor will one improve your chances of landing an adjunct position. The online schools provide all the training you need. It all comes down to whether you have the necessary credential to teach in whatever field they are needing at the time. For example, some of the harder positions to fill are accounting and finance instructors.
