MBA Certificate

A number of years ago, Tulane University offered a MINI MBA program and awarded a MBA CERTIFICATE after completion of an 8 week course.
They have since changed their program and now award a Mastering Certificate.

Is it disingenuous to include this credential after one\'s name ie Joe Degree, MBA (Certificate)?

It\'s not an MBA but it is a certificate representing a body of knowledge nonetheless.

    Thanks.

I suspect the reason for the name change was an acknowledgement of the possible confusion and perhaps misleading nature of the term MBA certificate. I believe the term MBA is well established and anything that tries to sound similar without comparable workload or verifiable knowledge and education is misleading.

Someone that uses any sort of representation of a degree without being awarded such degree is obviously wrong.

As a side note, those of us with real MBAs don't actually include this credential after our name anyway (those in the consulting field may be an exception). "Wearing" your education credentials is a great way to send a message that your experience is lacking.

I have Tulane's Master Certificate in Business Management, from the program that you are talking about.

I list it on my resume under the heading "Training" which is separate from my degrees which I list under "Education". It is, essentially, an executive training program, and you can find programs like it at several schools (Rutgers and University of St. Thomas to name two).

I never, NEVER call it an MBA certificate.

    I hope that this helps.

I went through the program a number of years ago. I have a certificate from Tulane signed by the Dean of the Freeman School of Business that says MBA Certificate on it.

I list it on my resume as MBA Certificate.

I also have a MBA, which I list on my resume as MBA.

The easiest thing to do I think is to read what the paper says and repeat those words on the resume.

    dlady,

Did you find the MBA Certificate Program useful?

What do you think of the new program?

    Thanks.

I think I did it in 2004. As a credential I don’t think it has helped anything, probably has not hurt anything either. From a content standpoint I really liked it, way better than most on-line classes where you have to read stuff only; here you got a whole bunch of video lectures to watch sync'ed to PP's, exercise to perform, a couple nights with on-line chats with the professor, and then took a test every two weeks online to demonstrate acquired knowledge.

I forget which professor it was, but in one of the chats I asked him how much of the content was similar to a full time Tulane MBA program, and he said they covered about half the content in these certificate programs. There are twelve classes total in all three certificates, so I would say the education value is exceptional.

I completed a PhD certificate in University teaching so I guess I can use it in my CV as "PhD certificate". I don't bother to put it in my resume but after reading this thread it makes me wonder.

You should be able to list it according to the designation supplied from the school. From memory, you earned a DBA from Australia. Correct? I don't think it would look peculiar when added to your existing credentials.

If you did it it aint bragging; why on earth not list it. Then when all the HR applications automatically scan for PhD the robots won’t discard your resume because they think your DBA means data base administrator.

(this is a joke about the lame state of HR not a DBA degree, shish)

Question. What is your assessment of the Tulane MBA Certificates as a refresher for those who already have an MBA from another school?

DaWagner (sorry I'm attending NCU so I couldn't help myself :)):

I would say the content would be very good, but it would be an extremely pricey refresher course, IMHO. I did it before I started the DL MBA degree to see if the subject-matter was for me, from that standpoint it was a terrific introduction to the material, and helped me with a leg up understanding much of the MBA content. I often re-watched the lectures from the Tulane program to help with the distance based MBA degree.

On the other hand, there probably is not anywhere else you could go for a real MBA refresher on-line that I know of, so it would be an interesting usage of the courses.

Are there any other MBA certificate programs that are comparable in delivery format and quality to Tulane's for less $$?

lol...very nice use of the word "question" before asking a question. Not sure if anyone else recognized it but I got it. Channeling Dwight Shrute for sure :D I love it! My favorite show for sure...

I think you meant to say "If you did it, it ain't lying". You can't brag about something unless you did it. However, listing an academic credential on a CV or resume certainly wouldn't be bragging. Now listing something like "MBA" after a name on a business card, if there is no need for outsiders to know you have an MBA, may be considered bragging or a cry for attention.

Interesting. Thanks. The delivery format makes it an option to doing a graduate certificate to update the MBA.

I have no problem with someone listing MBA after their name if they have earned an MBA. It is true that the tradition has fallen off in the last 15 years or so, but I personally don’t have a problem with it. In all honesty I find it kind of fun to see others credentials; if you have spent time building them why not show them off.

For example, if I could find a way to work my military combat service (7 firefights on 3 continents in 2 years), three masters degrees (2 NA and 1 RA) and the fact that I am finishing comps for my DBA into a conversation; not to mention 5 graduate certificates and 3 professional certifications into a conversation, I would do it.

    Oh wait.

(Lay off me I’m just bragging for the fun of it, jeez).

Wow! What accomplishments. I would think that it would make for a very interesting conversation. I know I would like to hear it. After 7 firefights on 3 continents in 2 years the rest must seem to be easy!

    Thanks for your service!

What I can honestly say is that my academic record before enlisting in the Army, and my academic record after enlisting in the Army are night and day. After 4 years of enlistment, 26 months of hazardous duty pay, 30 months of overseas pay; I was and continue to be motivated beyond belief to do anything else.
