I am investigating the possibility of replicating the oft-quoted and oft-misused 1978 Sosdian & Sharp article, "The External Degree as a Credential: Graduates Experiences in Employment and Further Study" using graduates from 100% online degree programs. The problem is that I cannot seem to find a copy of the actual article, only references to it in "Bears' Guide" and (misleadingly) on websites of unaccredited schools.

The U.S. National Institute of Education (the report's publisher) appears to be no more and neither the U.S. Dept. of Education nor the Dept. of Health & Human Services has any reference to the report on their websites.

Can anyone help me obtain this report?

According to the National Archives and Records Administration, the NIE's documents are archived in College Park, Maryland. Useful information, including the NIE's successor agencies, can be found on the NARA web site here.

The entire study is in a set of ERIC documents:

Sosdian, Carol and Sharp, Laurie. "The External Degree as a Credential: Graduates' Experiences in Employment and Further Study." Available from ERIC, ED 154728, 1978.

This was not exactly an article, but a report of some 124 pages. Mine (which I will not copy, because I am lazy) was copied from the stacks copy kept at the University of Northern Florida, so I would suggest contacting the UNF library at Jacksonville to see if they still have it in their stacks.

I appreciate your kind and rapid assistance! All three of these leads were fruitful. Thanks to you, I was able to locate the sources I need. Sosdian and Sharp actually did three reports based on their study and published an article in the Journal of Higher Education in 1979.

I am having a librarian friend obtain the reports for me. Again, thanks.
