I will be starting my doctoral classes soon. I was wanting to get feedback from some of you that are currently enrolled in doctoral level courses. How much time do you estimate you spend per week working on your assignments, etc. for your classes?
It depends I spend about 10-15 hours per week studying/writing. That's been about average and it depends on whether my courses are on very familiar subjects. Where are you taking doctorate courses? Maybe others that attend your school might offer up better advice on this topic. I can only speak for NCU.
I am also attending NCU and spend a bit less time - 8-10 hours a week. What school are you considering?
During my doctoral course work at Capella, I typically went 15 - 20 hours if I was enrolled in 2 classes, 20 - 25 if enrolled in 3 classes. Best of luck regardless of where you decide to go. Shawn
I didn't have any courses in my doctoral program, however, I spend about anywhere from 15 - 25 hours on my research per week; depending on my motivation level. This includes reading and writing. I have kept this level up for almost 3 years, year round.
I have enrolled in Argosy's DBA program. Thanks for all of the replies from everyone. I've spent lots of time debating the various programs and have finally made the decision that I feel is the right one for me. My first class starts on May 7. Tim
On average, I spend about 167.5 hours per week thinking or dreaming about my dissertation. Hopefully, that will all be done in just a few months. I hope to be done writing by early summer and to submit the beast for evaluation by late August.
I've been giving more consideration to programs of this type. I'm in NCU's PhD right now. One of the reasons I'm thinking of another program is that I rarely get any worthwhile feedback from the mentors. Other NCUers may have had different experiences but for me it's been one of read a chapter, write a paper, or answer some questions at the end of the chapter. I could do that with another school and maybe hone in on a topic of interest earlier, with a promoter that might take an interest. If that school is in SA then it's very low cost, too. Not sure what I'll do yet, really. NCU does seem to be fairly convenient and it is RA at a good price...compared to other options here. I'd go take a closer look at UNISA but no way am I going to do a DBL. I don't like that degree designation even if it is an actual doctorate. It's almost like the DocSocSci to me. I wonder if people here write...PhD instead of DocSocSci at the end of their name? I know that doctors from overseas, who receive a bachelor's of medicine degree, do use the MD designation. I guess that's equivalent here. Maybe the DocSocSci is not equivalent to a PhD.
Nomenclature My program's a PhD. I know what you mean, though, when I looked at Unisa I had a choice between a "DLitt et Phil" (?!) and a DEd. The last thing I want is "DEd" after my name, for people to be calling my wife to offer condolences.... However, rumor has it that South African academia will be moving to an all-"PhD" nomenclature in the not too distant future. -=Steve=-
