    OK,
One last time before I commit to a program! Please chime in if there is an affordable doctoral program here in the U.S.
I'm looking for something that costs 25k or possibly less.

I tried finding something in the humanities (((History)))) but had my heart broken....no programs via online (groan), except maybe Union, but the cost nixed that deal.

I could delineate from my chosen passion of History/Social Sciences somewhat if the price was affordable. At this point in my life, it's more about self enrichment than career enhancement, however if by chance it evolved into a career boost...well so be it. My undergrad was in Business Administration. Thus a little educational variety & interests. It was a good program with great experiences but I really love the social sciences..... boy oh boy am I setting myself up for a "you want fries with that" scenarios!

So, unless someone knows of a magical program here in the US for around 25k or less; for someone who is not very fickle anymore... I just may go the South African route!

    Comments?
    Suggestions?

    Thanks folks
    Gavin

If you find one, tell us! NCU is around that price, it would seem the cheapest out there is 22-25k.

I have found programs under 10k if you want to go overseas.

My opinion here is that you don't have strong enough motivation to finish a Ph.D. What is your precise field of interest? Why do you want to earn a Ph.D.? My motivation was clear; I need a Ph.D. in Business Administration for a full-time teaching career. In the absence of that motivation, I can't imagine one going to all that effort. How about pursuing a Masters degree or writing a book? Wouldn't those efforts be enriching and helpful to your career? (I intend this advice not to discourage you but to encourage a little introspection before you embark on such a long and difficult journey.)

Gavin, what is your motivation for a PhD? Are you currently employed in education and need a PhD for a pay boost? If this is the case, a SA degree might do the job at the minimum cost. Are you considering to switch to academia without academic experience? If this is the case, I would be careful about cheap options as a cheap PhD might have very little use for a new academic looking for a full time gig. If this self improvement? Then, a SA degree is also ideal as you are getting good quality education for your money.

Australian Schools might be an option as you can get a PhD at some schools for that range of 25. Some low cost options include University of Southern Queensland, Charles Sturt, Central Queensland University between others.

You have also the online for profit schools like NCU but they have very limited options in business and education as these are the main sellers for PhDs.
