Verily getting my @$$ kicked. That’s me in a nut shell right now. As many of you know I just started my MBA at St. Joseph’s College of Maine www.sjcme.edu and am in the process of taking MB540 the Economy as a System.

    A few things I’ve discovered.

1.) I am not as all fired smart as I thought I was.

2.) Independent Study method is all on you…no coddling or spoon feeding. Heck they don’t even tell you where the dinner table is, you’ve gotta find it yourself.

3.) Without an undergrad Business degree I find the content to be new, fascinating and at times bewildering….and I don’t even think we’re into the hard stuff yet.

4.) The Books are EXPENSIVE. And by expensive I mean I think I could have altered the GNP of a small African nation for how much I’ve spent in books.

Additionally they raised the tuition from $350 an hour to $375 an hour. This had me second guessing myself, I even cast a wayward eye at NCU with the whole one on one approach.

As far as the course materials, the lecture notes alone filled a 3” inch binder then there’s the journals and textbooks. A ridiculous amount of reading at a level that isn’t even in the same ball-park as what I would call “light” reading. We’re talking Kenneth E. Boulding Journals here. (If you don’t know him, read up on some of his stuff).

Is this program the “MBA-Lite” espoused by some here? I sure as hell hope not because this is sort of kicking my butt.

    Cheers

Looks like a solid program for those interested in leadership studies within an MBA versus a MA or other degree.

I studied in residence, full-time at a local AACSB state school in an MBA program prior to leaving for employment purposes. The workload was crazy! My fellow students and I decided the amount of reading was impossible, unless you don't sleep.

You can't earn an easy JD or MD, why should an MBA be any different. Just think of the amazing accomplishment it will be for you to finish! You can certainly be proud of yourself and that should be the most important thing.

    Have fun and good luck!

    Friendorfoe,
I know what you mean. I'm on my second MBA class at Indiana Wesleyan University and the workload has just increased at least four-fold. As I type this, I am alternating between this forum and a leadership article I have to read and comment on my tomorrow. Fun stuff but I guess that's what we signed up for. I'm sure my backside will be bruised very soon.
