Learning in the Digital World: A Treacherous Road to Flexible Learning?

The 20th International Conference on Technology and Education will once
again convene at congenial Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher
Education, in the beautiful city of expertise - Potchefstroom, South Africa,
from April 2 through April 5, 2002. Those of you who have attended the ICTE
2000 conference will remember it for its quality and the hospitality of our
hosts. A second rendezvous to the North West Province, which is only an
hour's drive from the Johannesburg International Airport, will surely be
delightful. Delegates attending for the first time will discover that they
will find themselves in the heartland of South Africa's agricultural and
mining industries, with an added bonus of being close to the most beautiful
tourist attractions in the Province. Potchefstroom is a pivotal education,
training and research centre in the Province. Potchefstroom University for
CHE was founded as a Theological Seminary in 1869 and today has twenty-four
academic divisions on two campuses with an enrolment of approximately 13 000
students. Through its Telematic Learning Systems Learning without Frontiers
initiative, the University offers a variety of learning programmes delivered
through appropriate technology in addition to traditional instruction. With
a focus on design and development of quality materials, methods for distance
learning, and cooperative development of distance learning programmes with
other institutions, Potchefstroom University is an ideal host institution
for ICTE South Africa in April 2002.

Plan now to attend ICTE AFRICA 2002. Take advantage of this opportunity to
share ideas and information with colleagues around the world, and to catch
up and share new trends in the changing world of education and technology.

ICTE AFRICA 2002 will focus on .
Technology is advancing with breathtaking speed. In educational
institutions worldwide, innovations in applications of technology to
learning are being developed at an accelerating pace. New and exciting
insights into successfully applying the new technology in the classroom are
resulting from this wide range of innovative projects. The great need for
these changes is however open to many pitfalls.

The Conference will provide a forum for vision and strategy, and will look
in detail at the processes, procedures, techniques and tools for creating
learning environments to serve diverse populations appropriate to the
twenty-first century. There will be numerous themes, each examining a
particular aspect of development and progress. A variety of theme-oriented
sessions, panel discussions, workshops as well as daily plenary session
presentations from internationally recognized leaders in education and
training, are planned.

I still say that Potch is an excellent choice for folks considering a distance learning Ph.D. in theology, and this is one of the reasons why: the folks at this school genuinely do conduct a great deal of independent research.

The Timetable for Presenters is a little goofy:

Deadline for receipt of Abstracts of less than 150 words- November 15, 2002
Presenter registration Fees due - January 29, 2002
Refereeing and Selection of Abstracts - November, 2002
Deadline for Completed Manuscripts - February 28, 2002
