Here is some food for thought: I have noticed a steep decrease in posting activity during weekends and holidays. Do most of you post during working hours while at work, and if so, how do you feel about the ethical issues surrounding using company time for personal use? Opinions? Pepe
Since I get paid to surf the net looking for experts in various fields, I'm constantly on the Internet. Since surfing the net can get very tedious (try it for 8 hours a day 5 days a week) we have a rule (its actually in our employee handbook) that personal web surfing is OK as long as the employee is able to get their work done. So far, there have been no instances of abuse of this 'freedom'. It would be a different story if my company had a strict 'no personal web surfing' policy.
Much of my work is done via email so I am online all day. I work at 8AM or noon or 7PM or 1AM. I am not regulated by "normal" hours; I work all the time - just ask my wife.
Actually It is certainly not ethical. I know that but I am also not able to get my hands off these good forums
"Ethics" you say... Just what are these "ethics." Well, I certainly wish I had some major corporation's time and money to sap on these forums... alas, all I have are my own. (sniff)
Considering how much time is wasted in the workplace by people gossiping and otherwise not engaged in work-related activities I would think anytime spent contributing to one's on-going education should be encouraged. I limit the amount of time at work during which personal web surfing occurs; usually scheduled breaks. During the overnight shift (graveyard shift) when there are large blocks of time between systems checks I balance my time between value-added services, studying towards career-related credentials, and surfing the web for information. I refuse to sleep at work!
