Currently, I am in an MBA program at Texas A&M--Commerce. So far it has been a good experience even though I am living in Europe and the school is located in Texas.

Before that I was in another MBA program in Texas while living in Europe and I experienced only problems.

The school officials were poor at communicating and seemed to not trust their students. They required a proctor for my course and send me on a wild goose chase trying to find one in my area.

My MBA advisor, after realizing that finding a proctor was too difficult, said that it was okay to not have a proctor for my course (and even my entire MBA program). However, another staff member did not agree with her and she kept making me look for a proctor. She gave me suggestion after suggestion and it took a lot of time to call up numerous prometric centers, universities, libraries, and embassy’s to ask them if they were willing to proctor my exam. When she finally asked me to find a priest to proctor my exam I knew things had gone too far.

I spent 20+ hours looking for a proctor in addition to taking my two graduate MBA courses. The day finally found a proctor and got a signed proctored exam form the director of the MBA program sent me an e-mail complaining about how hard it was for his staff to find someone in Europe willing to proctor my exams even though I was doing all of the legwork. In his e-mail, he suggested that I find another school for my MBA program.

The school also did some creative accounting with my student loan and they charged $4309 for 4 units which should have cost $2844. After having so many problems, being overcharged for my courses, and then receiving an invitation to quit from the director it was obvious to me that it was really too difficult to be in Europe and to take MBA courses at that school in Texas. So, I dropped all of my courses and started taking courses at Texas A&M--Commerce.

The school responded by sending a certified letter to one of my relatives in California asking for an additional $800 in fees and immediate repayment of my student loan. Even though it was not necessary, I paid off my student loan and the $800 within three weeks. After doing some calculations I figured out that my net costs for the 4 units was then $2916. The school even sent my relatives in California another letter several months after my student loan was paid off indicating that I was on student loan probation!!!

I have asked the school for a refund since it seems that at least $402.80 of my costs were student fees that should have been refunded. I also think the school should refund the entire amount because of the numerous problems to which I was exposed.

After some discussions the school admitted that they had problems communicating. However, they do not want to take any financial responsibility for the situation and are no longer responsive to my refund requests.

It is not feasible to hire a lawyer in Texas to deal with the school while I am in living Europe.

Who can help when problems occur with an MBA program in Texas and I am in living Europe???

I was adviced to work with the university in order to resolve this issue and this seems to have worked. On Monday, I received a letter from the President of University of Texas at Dallas. He indicated that UTD is going to send me a refund check which includes all of my tuition and fees. This decision was warranted due to all of the problems I encountered communicating via e-mail with the university :)
