I've noticed that there are quite a few British doctorates in the Humanities that are by dissertation only. Some have mentioned that although they are not designed as distance learning programs, they can be negotiated with a few short visits to campus.

I am not having much luck locating a US program that matches my interests (culture) and I travel to the UK at least once a year so this option is starting to look better.

    1. Since the exchange rate is so horrible does anybody know the least expensive British universities?

    2. If there are any users pursuing a UK doctorate would you mind sharing how you went about enrolling in the program and any other advice you can offer?

If money is an issue, try University of South Africa.
It's by dissertation only and very cheap ($2K to $3K a year).

You might want to pick up a copy of "The Good University Guide." It's a university guide published in the UK. It might have tuition rates in there.

I agree. Note that in most cases with Unisa you won't have to go there. They do have a reputation for being bureaucratic, but to cut red tape you can work with their North American agent, Dr. Michael Esselen.

    Good luck,
