Hello everyone! I am wrapping up my BS in Liberal Studies with Excelsior and was wondering what to do afterwards. I wanted to pursue the LS Degree since it related closely to all my previous college credits and it was more or less the quickest B.S degree for me to finish. I always wanted to pursue a BS General Business degree with Excelsior, but I'm not sure how long that would take me as far as completion time after graduation. My questions to the forum are: 1. Should I continue on with the BGB degree? or 2. Pursue an MBA, or 3. If I go with the 2nd EC BGB degree route, how many credits from my BSLS can I apply or would I have to acquire totally new credits for the new BGB degree? 4. If I transfer to TESC instead for the 2nd BS degree (would have to go with BSBA), would I be better off with EC BGB instead as far as transfer credits? I know these seem like a quite a lot of questions to ask, I just have too many thoughts, pros/cons running in my head at present to make a sound decision and would like to hear the forum's advice and recommendations on my future degree plans. Looking back at the past, this forum has always helped me make the right degree decisions, and I can't tell you how much I really appreciate it. Excelsior will require 30 new hours in your second BS. You can use 90 hours from your BSLS if they apply to the new degree. If you're going business though, why not an MBA right now? I could see if you now wanted a BS in Sociology of some such or if you already had the 30 new hours and haven't used them in a degree program yet. In your case, I'd look at some grad programs...
You might want to post what you plan to do with either degree, it helps see where you are going with it. Generally speaking, if it's 30 credits to get a 2nd bachelors, or 32 grad credits to get an MBA, I think the MBA has quite a bit more utility
Thank you for the advice!! Originally I wanted a BGB, but looking at the requirements back then it would have taken me years since I would have to sit through most of the requirements. At least the BLS would lift me up a notch at work. Working through the BLS, I realized that I could feasibly acquire 90 hours towards the BGB as well. But as you folks pointed out, why go backwards and not get an MBA? Considering my area of focus will be Admin/Mgmt, I could try my hand at an MBA but can I survive given I would have only completed a BLS? Or should I go through the BGB then MBA? I believe the issue that bothers me the most is whether or not I can complete an MBA with a BLS degree requirements. Thanks again, Sonny
Sonny, There are plenty of MBA programs that admit students with a bachelor's degree in any field. A good place to start your search would be at www.geteducated.com Look through their 'Best buy' listings for online MBAs. There are both state colleges and private institutions listed. The only catch to not having a business undergraduate degree is you may have to take some prerequisite courses while enrolled in the MBA program. Usually, these are only about 5-7 courses. It may take longer to complete and cost more, but you will be enrolled in the MBA program.
I have a BA in Music and a BSc in Liberal Studies. I'm presently in a resident MBA and am having very little difficulty. Where I find myself unprepared is in math skills - where I find myself ahead of business type peers is in critical thinking and synthesis. I still say go for the MBA instead of another bachelor's -- the prerequisite courses will level you up just fine.
I will explore the MBA route I've always considered the advice of the "wise ones" on this forum since you have all been through a lot and pass excellent information on to those in need. I'll definitely explore the MBA option and scout what path lies ahead. From the surface, looking for a decent MBA school seems like looking for a needle in a haystack, but I'm sure I'll narrow it down in due time. Sonny, You should continue to get your MBA, I don't see the point getting two Bachelor degree. I thought about getting a second Bachelor degree through Thomas Edison State College in Business as well; but I am in IT. So, there is no need to go for second Bachelor. Right now, I am initially working on two Master degrees; but maybe I am going to change my plan later. It is either two Master degrees, and stop; or one Master degree and one Ph.D. I don't know yet, but time will give me the answer. GO FOR MBA!!!!!!!
Sonny, If the MBA is what you want, then go for it. I had mediocre grades as an undergrad in communications/journalism. When I applied to the University of Akron's MBA program, (AACSB accredited BTW), I had to take 12 hours of undergrad business courses, followed by the MBA Foundation courses. The undergrad courses counted towards my MBA Foundation, so I didn't have to take them twice. Although I had to work at it, the MBA was very doable. I earned a 3.7 GPA and was inducted into the management honor fraternity. Shawn
Searching for a fast, simple MBA program TEKMAN, Shawn (and the folks above), I did some serious soul searching through the vast MBA programs out there. What's strange is some look for a GMAT scores some don't. Some require undergrad business courses while some have them embedded in their programs. I must have looked at 50 programs in one night - talk about tired eyes! It seems possible for me to accomplish, but given I swerved away from business classes before, not so confident about entering an MBA immediately after graduating. I might take Shawn's route and take undergrad business courses first to prepare for the MBA ahead. I noticed Colorado Tech Univ's program, it seemed do-able. Not sure though what to look for in an MBA school - that's a whole different thread I guess. I can only thank everyone for opening my eyes towards an MBA instead of a 2nd degree. It appears the scales are tipping towards MBA prep and an MBA program here in the near future! I'll keep you all posted! I appreciate all the help & More power to you all, Sonny
Re: Searching for a fast, simple MBA program If you go my route and take undergraduate business courses, BE SURE to talk with the folks who are in charge of the MBA program. I graduated with a 2.3 in my UG program; students who had a 3.0 or better typically went right into the MBA foundation courses. Shawn
