    Hi All,
I am in the final stages of selecting a DL school to complete my BA (Liberal Arts with emphasis in English/Political Science or some combination) and have just found this site after reading Bears Guide. The forum has already been really informative.

Just wondering if anyone can give me some feedback on the programs at DePaul or UMUC? I have over 90 units and would like to complete within 1 year but also want a degree from a "traditional" or what you would call B&M school. I have also looked at Excelsior.

The DePaul counselor was quite helpful but since I can't find the school mentioned in the Bears' book I'm a little worried. I know they have a fine name and traditional but I'm new to the DL world (although did get paralegal certification online and loved it - as challenging as any college course I've ever taken.)

Any info would really be appreciated!!!!!!

I went to the DePaul School 4 new learning open house some time back. It's a great program ..... kinda expensive! They base the degree on completing 50 competencies instead of credits. They have some residency requirements that can be completed online. A great way to earn a BA in Liberal Arts from Depaul. I went with excelsior instead, much faster and they awarded me a ton of transfer credit that DePaul wouldn't.

You might want to use the search function on this website and check out things like epinions.com and rateitall.com to get a feel for UMUC. I am from Maryland and considered taking my coursework there until I researched the school. Maybe things have changed in the past few years, but a few years back their reputation was not that good.

Well, between DePaul and University of Maryland - University College; I would go with DePaul. I think DePaul University is very expensive, but tuition is not an issued then go for it. Have you ever checking out Troy University (Formerly Troy State University); I had good experience with them.

Bachelor of Science in Political Science
Req: 120 Credits : can transfer up to 90 credits

In terms of quality - go with DePaul.

    My opinion...

    for what it's worth:

I would also say that you should consider where you live or want to live, i.e. what region of the country. If you are an East Coaster, UMUC might be better. If you want to live in the Midwest, DePaul would have more name recognition there. If you are in Texas, University of Texas might be a better fit. Just an idea.

I dont know anything about DePaul and wont speak to the issue of prestige, but I am currently 3/4 of the way through my second online class with UMUC and am pretty happy with their classes. The classes I have taken are sciences, not
English or PoliSci, so it may be different. What I can say is that the profs I have had know the subject and put a lot of time into it. They also make an effort to make class discussion be a real discussion not just post your homework and comment on other people's homework as I experienced in Excelsior online classes. The profs at UMUC do their own grading. (At Excelsior my online classes had teams of "graders" whoich i think contributed to the sense of absent, uncaring profs.) The classes are relatively expensive, but UMUC offered some classes that I needed and could not otherwise find.

The main reason I did not got with Depaul was because they would not transfer in DSST credits. FYI.

    Re: My opinion...

I agree with you in principle, but for those in the Mid-Atlantic I think I'd go with Penn State World Campus before UMUC, and for those in New England I'd go with UMass Online.

All those programs (PSU, UMUC, Depaul) are excellent with great name recognition, but I didn't look into them after I learned they would only accept a maximum of 90 credits from my previous institution.
