    Hello, folks!

    Greetings!

It is certainly interesting for me to know the opinions of some members about the utiliy of CELTA in Australia, for example, those expressed by Peter French. In this sense, while I certainly do not equate CELTA with an Australian pre-service teaching qualification, it appears that CELTA is recognized as a stand-alone TESOL qualification. Please check out:

Also, according to some sources, "This course is recognised world-wide as the minimum requirement for English language teachers. In order to teach in Australia, this certificate, with a degree is recognised by the Australian Government as a minumum qualification to teach in English Language Institutions". Again, please check out:

Thus, if we agree with this last statement, it appears to me that a regular degree plus a CELTA can be studied in lieu of a pre-service teaching qualification.

For information purposes, the centers offering the CELTA in Australia are:

    1) AUSTRALIAN TESOL TRAINING CENTRE

    2) BUCKINGHAM COLLEGE OF ENGLISH

    3) EDITH COWAN UNIVERSITY

    4) HOLMESGLEN INSTITUTE OF TAFE

    5) UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, SYDNEY

    6) UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND

    7) INTERNATIONAL HOUSE QUEENSLAND

    8) INTERNATIONAL HOUSE SYDNEY

    9) ITTC /HOLMES COLLEGES

    10) LA TROBE UNIVERSITY

    11) MILNER INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE OF ENGLISH

    12) PHOENIX ENGLISH LANGUAGE ACADEMY

    13) RMIT UNIVERSITY: CELL

    14) SOUTH AUSTRALIAN COLLEGE OF ENGLISH

    15) ST MARK'S INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE

    16) TASMANIAN COLLEGE OF ENGLISH

Thank you for your time in reading this.

    All the very best,

    Hi my friend

Others may wish to comment, but my comments simply are:

    1. CELTA is not about standard teaching credentials - it is about teaching English to Foreign Students.

    2. CELTA is a 4 week full time course, and is quoted as a 'minimum' qualification. You can't get much less than 4 weeks, or it would be non-existent :)

    3. NEAS Accredited English Colleges will only accept the CELTA qualification if (1) the person is a qualified and experienced fully trained teacher in another context and has for example 5 years TESOL experience or similar elswhere e.g. in Japan, Korea etc.; (2) the person holds a full degree and has had considerable [again read 5 years] teaching experience.

    4. You need to understand that a recognised minimum teaching qualification here is a 3 year undergraduate degee [our degree streams are typically 75% core and 25% degree electives content, and no general education component as in US], followed by a 1 years Dip Ed or Grad Dip Ed which includes a supervised extensive praticum. Another typical option is a 4 year Bachelor of Education degree with 2 years topic core [in this case ESL, TESOL etc] and 2 years teacher training [ed methods, ed psych etc etc]

    5. The other and more preferable course, is to do say a BEd or BA/Grad Dip Ed and then a MEd in TESOL.

THEN I and any other College staff selectors may put the applicant on the initial short list.

Those considering the CELTA or even the DELTA as a qualification to teach in this area, should be on notice that the qulaification has very restricted application. Yes you can teach English in Japan, and Korea, and Thailand to private groups and even in schools in some cases, but in most jurisdictions you will m,ost likely never be regarded as a professional TESOL teacher.

This program is a good money earner for the providers who at times exhibit great degrees of variation, and we hope that the 'graduates' [I suppose that you can be called a graduate in 4 weeks :))]
have every success in teaching English overseas.
