............Capella U. does it's first IPO - 4 million shares at $20 a pop - and nobody has trashed them yet. Am I in the twighlight zone or in the wrong forum? What the heck is up?

*Yawn*.....It's a federal holiday; everyone's too relaxed. Don't worry, maybe you'll find someone to fight with tomorrow.

Unfortunately, you'll need to find someone else (sorry). I don't have a problem with Capella or "for profit" colleges. By the way,
    here's the link .

It's been nearly impossible to post anything lately - lots of error messages when I try.

Tell me about it! It takes me an average or 3 or 4 tries (including this post), and I've learned to copy the draft to the clipboard first.

Well, if I've got my math right, it seems that Capella just raised about $80,000,000 (minus some small fee for their stock underwiters). What could they be doing? A: They're buying a competitor? B: They're starting a bricks & mortar campus? C: The original stockholders wanted a bit of liquidity for their investments?

Glimeber, so who cares if someone has a problem with that anyway? nothing is criticism-proof.
Take it easy, bro. Life is too short. ;)

Quite frankly, I didn't know about it. Now that I do, I just don't care.

What's the difference if a for-profit school is selling shares or if a public school is accepting donations from some fat-cat alumnus?

    Actually quite surprised ...

In the rather extensive research I have been conducting during my online faculty job search, I was surprised to learn that Capella seems to be the only for-proft (thus far) that hasn't emassed an empire of off/online programs.

Laureate Education, the parent of Walden University, seems to own a university in every country around the world!

    Dave,
Not wanting to fight with anyone at all. What I really wanted to do was offer the UOP, Capella, FP haters a therapeutic forum to rant, rave, and hyperventilate. You know.....just get it out in the open and get it over with before the weekend. My motives were truly clinical.

    Amigo,
Oh...I agree and I really don't care. Unfortunatley, a whole lotta people on this forum do.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Come on you guys.........

    Truckie 270,

Well that isn't exactly right. I have been on this forum since 2001 with a grand total of 92 posts. I am guessing that nearly half of that total has occurred within the past year. As far as stirring things up - yep......I plead guilt and this is why. For years I sat back, watched, and listened to the talking heads persecute a handful of schools who were guilty of nothing more that being for-profit. Hell....we even had one 'ole boy who repeatedly attacked one of the FP's that we later discovered was taking a check from the very same school as an adjunct. For the most part I have kept my mouth shut even though the attacks and hatemongering appeared to increase year after year.

Now there is no doubting the fact that this group tends to favor a few schools (i.e. reference the repeated Big 3 lovefests that routinely occur). That is OK - I have no beef there. What I do have a beef with is the fact that the FP's are criticized or bashed for xyz behaviors while others receive only love when they do, in fact, practice the very same xyz behavior. You will probably find that nearly all of my posts pertain to this single particular topic or event. Guess that makes me a "selective" trouble stirrer.

Now.....I know there are a hell of a lot of people who are saying (or thinking) - geesh why won't this guy get off his soap box, move to another topic or just shut the hell up! The answer, my friend, is because there are a lot of newbies utilizing this forum. It is important that they recognize the fact that there is a well documented bias toward and against certain schools. As you know I always advise - don't believe everything you read here and always, always do your own research.

This forum has value and it is a great place to seek opinions but just like used cars - test carefully. One thing is for certain, my message is the same and it is honest. Some might call it stirring trouble while others might refer to it as crusading. I am neither a UOP, Capella, etc.....lover or hater. If I were a newbie I would, however, be glad that someone took the time to shine the light of truth on this topic before I sunk thousands of my own hard earned $$ into any program of study. I will tell you that I have received numerous private messages applauding my approach to this very topic. To those who find it annoying I would highly recommend they have my all messages from me blocked.

What could they be doing? A: They're buying a competitor?

They now have enough money to buy Touro U. and move into Western Accreditation area.

Could be. Alternatively, now that Keiser College has gotten its SACS reaffirmation with flying colors, the Keiser family might finally be able to sell out.

I was just poking at you for fun. I have been on this board for a long time as a lurker - I only registered recently. I have read all of the for-profit v. non-profit discussion, the 100% DL PhD v. the PhD with a residency, etc.

I have seen the tone of comments around here tend to lighten up in the last year or so as some of the more negative posters have left. This is a DL discussion board, not IvyLeague.com.

Most everyone here should realize that DL will be viewed with skepticism by the mainstream until DL becomes the mainstream.

In other words, if you were to make eight more posts, you could get into the Guiness Book of World Records for longest time to Senior Member status at degreeinfo.com.

I, on the other hand, have been on this board since February 2005, with close to 4500 posts. Of these, close to 1000 have been within the last 9 months. What's going on here?
