OK, so here it is. I am almost done with a Masters in Diplomacy from Norwich University (2 more classes to go, yahoo); I really want to do an MBA, and since my employer pays 50% of it - I was looking at the online MBA at the University of Liverpool, and the MBA from Ellis College (NYIT).

I know about NYIT since I am in NYC, and the reputation is pretty solid here (mainly in the tech field though), I do not know anything about Liverpool. I know that Norwich has an online MBA, but I want to another school.

Also, I went to AIU, LA campus (NOT ONLINE), and I know that they have the online MBA as well, but they seem to be falling from grace, so I did not consider them.

Any advice would be most helpful. Thanks.

Are you sure you aren't stalking me? Just kidding!

I completed the Cornell - Executive Leadership Program in 2005 and hold an MBA from the University of Liverpool as well. I would be happy to provide some information if you could expand on your wants/needs for an MBA program.

Aside from the cost, it is a very good program and I have no regrets getting involved in it in late 2003. The best part of the program was the completion of my dissertation. This has allowed me to enter into a research based PhD/Doctoral program without having to make-up courses or complete an MPhil. I have been offered teaching positions at the local college and the degree is very well accepted academically and through work opportunities.

Leave a post if I can be of further assistance,

WOW! That is funny. No I am not stalking you, yet.

nyway, my main concern with UoL is that they are on the other side of the pond, and I am not too sure how it will be looked upon in the US.

Cornel was a great learning place, did you go to campus or eCornel, same programs (I think); I went to the NY extension, it was awsome. Wish I had 100K for the cornell MBA.

Any input on perception of the UoL in the US (east coast) would be much appreciated. Also, the MBA will be my last degree so I want it to have impact.

    Hi Morgan and Jonathan,

Do you find Executive Leadership Certificate from Cornell University helpful at all in securing jobs? In other words, do potential employers value it as much as the name, Cornell, itself?

Well, since I am in New York it does seem to stand out quite a bit. Cornel is one of the top schools in NY and the world (actually), so it does not hurt. My employer paid for me to go there I went part time for six months (on campus); but the eCornel offering is very similar (compressed ofcourse) but should really be helpful on your resume and you will learn tons of stuff about managing teams and producing and getting people to produce. Well worth it for me.

    Hi sshuang & Jonathan,

I live close to Cornell and thought I would take the program to add something "American" to my resume! I also whipped off the Rutgers - Program Management Cert. as well, just to compliment my MBA.

Now about the utility of the UK degree, I strongly believe that a well rounded business person would want to present a global educational background in their portfolio of achievements. What better way to do this then to earn a foreign degree?

In today's society, we have a global network of employees in our large companies, institutions of higher learning are saturated with foreign educators and business is being done on a global level now more than ever before. Think of the contacts that you will make while learning more about business practices in other countries? To this end, I have made a tremendous number of contacts and we meet in various locations, some pre-arranged while others as part of a business trip of personal travel.

The MBA program at Liverpool is a challenging one, you can't complete the program modules in the prescribed 10 - 15 hours per week. You have to apply yourself and work at it every day in order to make things flow well and achieve high marks. I wanted the degree to become a stepping stone to higher education and to this end it has been highly received where-ever I go.

So far, the fact that I have earned a degree from outside this country has proven to be a real plus for me. I could have defaulted on my education and earned all of my degrees from one school, as it is now, I have one local under-graduate degree and I'm working on my 3rd foreign degree. There have been no road blocks because of this and when I was offered a job as a Professor of Economics at the local college, they couldn't help but comment on my diverse educational background. Not all of the acclaim could be directed towards that Cornell Cert.!!

The job requirement was for an MBA specifically, that's what got me the offer. So I think that you will be pleasantly surprised at the reception you will receive from a foreign degree, today we live in a global society and it is appreciated when you can show a willingness to diversify your knowledge base.

    UOL Masters...

I am actually finishing up the MSIT program at Liverpool, I would assume that most of what applies for the MSIT applies for the MBA as well.

The classes are definitely challenging and I would estimate that you will need around 20 hours a week to get reasonable grades. In addition the level of participation is significant and I usually end up writing about 20 pages a week as part of the discussions and submissions.

In the UK UoL has a good reputation and there generally should be no problems with acceptance with UoL Master degree.

I am chiming in a bit late here but, I'm set to graduate on December 24th with my MBA from NYIT. I can recommend the program highly! If you decide to change your mind or want further details, let me know...

sure any details would be great. Most important for me is How is the Degree looked upon by employers, since the NYIT brand is not so strong (anymore).

    Well,
I'm not 100% sure what you would like to know but, every school has their positives and negatives. I think one of the big positives is that everything is relative and updated. Some schools, in my experience, focus on theory that is sometimes outdated and historical in thought. NYiT focuses on items that seem to be real world and relavent. One of the big sellers was that there arn't any tests or quizzes as all of the assignements are project/scenario based. For example, my most recent paper was on 3M's dealings with China on a recent global expansion. I think this method is better than saying explain the 3 Modes of global business... LOL... There are of course many many more positives like the interface which is simply magnificant... The big negative in my mind is that Ellis is a marketing beast which may be tarnishing the image of the school... Some students are in the program that can't hardly speak english let alone write a paper... They are eventually weeded I out but, it would be best to be less of a marketing machine and more concerned about the value of the degree... The other thing that T's me off is the fact that some prof's are UoP like in that it would seem everyone recieves an A... Every university has this though so I guess I shouldnt be surprised... I'll gladly answer any specific questions...

WELL, THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I THOUGHT ABOUT ELLIS. I am aware of the great reputation that NYIT has enjoyed in NY and the east coast, but I think that Ellis is doing an overkill of the brand and it is hurting a bit.

By the way Norwich is also online and the profs do not hand out A's it is a very challenging school and the programs are very well structured.

I would go with an NYIT MBA if the MBA degree was well received in the job market, I am just not very sure. ANy thoughts.

I'm not sure country wide about how well it is percieved... I personally know several who have gone in the past or are currently attending... My CTO recommended the program for the MBA w/Technology Manag. Concentration so in his eyes its a great program... When I performed my search for a good school, long before his recommendation, I was leary of overseas schools just because I have had super's in the past that have looked down on them... That's about all I can offer on that front though...

You're graduating in Dec? How long has it taken you? Congratulations.

I guess your diploma will have Ellis College and NYIT on it?

So can you just say you graduated from NYIT without mentioning Ellis College? Or would that be stretchning it a bit?

It has taken a little over 2 years... The degree actually has no mention of Ellis which is another reason why I chose the school. I had to triple check on this with NYiT and Ellis just to be sure but, it is the same degree MBA's that attend the B&M recieve...

So it'll read MBA from New York Institute of Technology? And no mention of Ellis College? If this is the case, great!

Exactly... I also plan on attending the B&M graduation in May as you walk with the business school at NYIT!
