Does anyone know of a online college in which I can start taking online courses towards my bacholers degree majoring in education?

ORU (mentioned in another thread) offers a B.A. in Christian elementary school education. Some of the courses are going to be more generic education courses and so may be of value to you. They have quite a few offered by correspondence and then modular and summer sessions. Check to make sure you are taking courses that are needed in your degree plan. You then should be able to take the ORU course (eg classroom management) & transfer it. Always check with the school first. ORU is fully accredited, etc.

You will find few programs in the U.S. called a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.). What it's called in your state may vary. I am making the assumption that you want to teach elementary school. If so, a number of states offer degrees in Liberal Studies or Elementary Education. Some examples of U.S.-based programs are located at Judson College, Nova Southeastern University, the University of Northern Iowa, and the CalState Teach program in California.

Also, it's important to note that it is still possible in many states to earn the degree in any field and prove your knowledge through taking the Multiple Subjects Assessment Test (MSAT) offered by ETS.

Remember that in most states now you are taught how to be a teacher post-bachelor's degree in a (typically) one year credential/certificate/license program.

I gleaned all of the above from a book I recently co-authored on this very topic (with some of the nice people around here) called "Bears' Guide to the Best Education Degrees by Distance Learning". You can take a look at it at http://www.degree.net/books/educationdegrees.html

It should be but I cannot stress enough that you need to check with the University you would be planning to transfer the credits to ensure they meet specific course requirements. Some fo them should be similar and it also should be possible to meet some of your general education requirements this way BUT check first. Schools are funny. We have had a battles between our RA University & our RA community college.

Kristin's advice is also good. There are a couple of innovative teacher programs out there which will allow DL with short residency and arranged student teaching. Dr. Bear wrote a good guide to these programs.

    Good Luck! [IMG]

As Tom Nixon points out, there's no such thing as a bachelor's degree in education, at least here in California.

If you are interested in elementary school education, more specifically in earning a 'multiple subjects credential', the usual route is to earn a BA in liberal studies (essentially a general education bachelors) and then obtain a teaching credential in a fifth, post-graduate year that includes student teaching etc.

California State University, Chico (aka in Northern California as Chico State) offers an online BA in liberal studies for prospective elementary teachers:

  7. And they offer CalStateTEACH, through which you can earn a Multiple Subject Credential with emphasis in Cross-cultural, Language, and Academic Development (CLAD). Program uses on-line, print and CD-ROM materials, as well as five Saturday seminars in regional centers. See http://www.calstateteach.net/info.htm

And CalStateTeach has also announced that they will now be doing their own BA in Liberal Studies to prepare people to become elementary school teachers.
