I was looking at the list of US schools that China recognizes the other day. I couldn't find any of the DETC accredited schools in that list. Do foreign countries really recognize NA schools?

It depends on the country. I have no idea about China but very most Continental European countries do not recognize NA degrees. In Germany it's even a crime to use these degrees!

You seem to have two different questions. Are NA schools GAAP? Any US school accredited by an accrediting agency which is itself accredited by USDOE and/or CHEA is GAAP, and NA qualifies. Do foreign countries accept NA? Depends on the country.

Perhaps I was mistaken. I thought GAAP was universal.

GAAP is a very American concept, no universiality to it, although some countries do get it credence.

Degree.net lists the following regarding GAAP:

To meet GAAP standards, at least one of the following must be met...

    1) Recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation in Washington, DC (CHEA)
    2) Recognized by the U.S. Department of Education
    3) Recognized by (or more commonly, a part of) their relevant national education agency.
    4) Schools they accredit are routinely listed in one or more of the following publications: the International Handbook of Universities (a UNESCO publication), the Commonwealth Universities Yearbook, the World Education Series, published by PIER, or the Countries Series, published by NOOSR in Australia.

The most common NA agencies discussed here meet both #1 and #2 (TRACS, ABHE, DETC, AACSB, etc.)

This link to CHEA's website (http://www.chea.org/public_info/index.asp#who) lists all US accreditation agencies. All fall under GAAP.
