I was embarrassed recently when someone asked me about the responders for the paper I'm presenting next year at the Society for Pentecostal Studies conference. I didn't have an answer.

Could someone here shed light on the job of a responder?

    Thanks.

The role of the respondant at a conference is to read the papers presented at a panel discussion and to critique the papers. I did this at the IUS Conference on Armed Forces and Society last October and it was an excellent experience.

    Thanks, Shawn.

    That clears things up.

Do they normally critique the papers before or after presentation? Also, will the critique determine whether or not the paper can be published in the conference journal/book?

    Again, thanks for the insight.

P.S. I see you went to Ship. Ever hear of Chambersburg or Waynesboro, Pa.? I'm only about a 20 min. drive from Shippensburg.

From my experience, I had copies of all the papers on my panel ahead of time. I then took time to prepare the critiques ahead of time. I then presented at the conference a 10 minute summation of the each paper with my comments - after which there was time for the author to respond.

As far as publication, one would have to submit to a journal - but I have discovered that many use conferences for a first draft before journal submission.

I know where Chambersburg is - as a matter of fact, I used to attend National Guard drill at the armory on Radio Hill, where WCBG used to be.

    Best of luck.

    Thanks, Shawn.

What topic are you researching for your doctorate?

I'm pursuing a PhD in Church History through the Univ. of Pretoria in S. Africa. My research is on F.F. Bosworth (1877-1958), a pioneer Pentecostal healing evangelist.

My PhD diss. plans to examine why soldiers left the National Guard after deployment. I am an Organization/Management PhD Candidate.

    Shawn,

    That's a fascinating topic.

Not sure of your goals in terms of publication, but I'd think this research will be relatively easy to publish. It should generate lots of attention and discussion by those in academics and the national media.

I finished my sint with the military just before the war started. My youngest son is stationed in Iraq. He and I are having discussions about his future.

    Good luck.
