We have received a request from one of our students to transfer credit into our program from a program offered by the United States Army War College. We have the catalog, a statement from the Registrar's Office about which course were taken, credit hours received, and retirement points earned, but so far I haven't been able to elicit any information on the following:

    1) Are letter grades assigned to each of the required classes or are the classes taken Credit/No Credit?

    2) If the classes are taken Credit/No Credit, what is the minimum a student must achieve on submitted papers/assignments in order to receive credit for each course?

    3) What is the semester hour equivalent of one of the courses, for which the AWC awards 27 Credit Hours?

The AWC is a candidate for regional accreditation by Middle States and was advanced to candidacy in March 2001. The program is considered to be a Master of Strategic Studies.

Do any of you have any experience with AWC? Can you speak to the standards required of students fulfilling their program? Thanks for any feedback you can provide.

I have had zero experience with this school, however I noticed that no one gave you any assistance so I decided to do what I could to get you something:

In all liklihood, AWC courses have been evaluated for credit by the American Council for Education (ACE). ACE publishes a guide for courses from each military service. You will need to note when the person attended (credit recommendations change as the curriculum evolves) and whether or not the person attended in residence or not (a HUGE difference in most cases). I would guess your admissions office has the ACE guide.

It is likely the credits awarded are semester hours, but again, ACE will tell you.

Even if letter grades are not given, each portion of the curriculum is tested and graded. It was my experience as an education specialist and education officer in the Air Force that these were not posted on a transcript. That may have changed over time, or be a practice at in one service's schools but not another's.

The services' War Colleges are challenging in many ways, including academically. The Naval War College awards accredited master's degrees to its graduates; I don't believe the Air Force does. But the curriculum and demands on the students are definitely graduate level, as ACE will confirm.

  4. Nichole,

Good luck. The Army's Command & General Staff College at Leavenworth (one year) is accepted by the local RA schools for about 12-16 credits - primarily logistics.

War College is also one year long. It's considered a step above C&GS (05's/06's) but I can't honestly say that's it's any harder. No one is ever failed from it.

    Hope this helps.

My dad retired as an Army O-9, but he attended the Air University (which is the equivalent of the Army War college). Not much help, but it's interesting!
