Well in a previous post I was seeking advice for choosing which DL program (TESC, COSC, or Governors State U) I wanted to finish my Bachelors degree with. Well I had an advisement session today with GSU and I have decided to stick with them. Basically I have 110 Hours towards my degree already. At GSU I will loose 9 hours as they cap the UD level that you can transfer in at 80. That's not a really big deal though as either way I need 19 more hours to meet their 40hour Upper Division requirement. I also need 6 more at GSU to meet their 24hour residency requirement. In the end, while TESC and COSC would be easier routes, (only have to take CLEPS to finish), there were a few things that swayed my opinion. Because of the time I would have to wait for TESC and COSC to evaluate my transcripts, I couldn't finish until late spring at the earliest. This is the same case for GSU, as the winter trimester ends on April 23. In terms of classes I can take up to 8 hours (only need 6) of workshop classes to clear my residency requirement. These workshops are only 1 or 2 day, 8hour classes that are pretty easy A's (I can use that for my GPA). From there I would just need to take/pass 4 Dantes test and I am finished. As an alternative I could also take some pretty easy online courses either for either 8 or 15 weeks. The tuition for GSU is only about $160 per credit hour when you factor in all of the DL fees. So depending on how I map everything out, at most I would only be out of about $3600 max, and in reality it will only be about $1500. When I take all of these things into account, coupled with the bonus of having a "name brand" school, the decision was easy. I know without any question that TESC and COSC are legitimate schools and they afford DL learners a great service. With that said, I've already had to explain to many people (my employer, family, and friends) what/where these schools are, their history, etc. On the other hand when I say Governors State University, everyone knows about the University and there is no need to explain to people the fact that they are indeed a legit school. As an added bonus I also found out today that the name of the degree/program is changing from the BOG/BA (Board of Governors) Degree, to a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies as of Nov. 1st 2006. Well hopefully my information can be useful to others in my situation. I will keep the board up to date on my progress. For now, I'm about the board for some suggestions for some, "not so complicated" DANTES exams that I can take. Thanks
Good luck to you. I took two Dantes tests, World Religions and Drugs and Alcohol. I took both on the same day and passed with ease. I went to the Dantes web site to see what they recommended and purchased one recommended book for each test and read them over about a week before the test. They were not hard and they were very straight forward. It was a very inexpensive way to earn 6 credits. Marie
Hey Alex's mom. Did you by any chance do the Ethics in America for Dantes and how did you do it. I have a book , but can't seem to finish it because of my other classes going on. Thanks
