Short-residency PhD programs?

I've spent this weekend researching online PhD's in Education and EdD's. I contacted NCU; they were eager to talk to me and would take most of my credits. However, what I've learned about them in the meantime is anything but promising. I am also considering short residency programs so would Argosy be a good choice? I've not read anything negative about them and wonder if any of you have. Any other school recommendations would be appreciated.

I am hopeful that'll I get to finish with TUI but I like being prepared nonetheless

    Thank you kindly,

    Susanna

What have you learned about NCU that is not promising? I am curious to hear what you have learned about them. I have attended NCU for the past year and have nothing but good things to say about them. I understand that everyone has their opinions and I respect that but since I'm a student and will be carrying their degree around I am interested to hear what you have heard.

They have been around for a short period of time if 10 years is short. No matter what you will find people with good and bad opinions of the school. Find the facts and make a choice. I have been with them about two years and I enjoy it.

    Hi Randell.

    :) Hi Randell,
What's the deal with this NCU, because I had good intentions with them as well.
What I would like to know for sure is if you finish your degree with them , can you get a job easily or are there additional problems hiding behind NCU? What program are you in Randell and how long will it take you?
    Thank you.

    Re: Hi Randell.

I started in the fall of 2004 and took one class. In 2005, I took three classes, 2006 I have taken two classes. I am taking three classes per year because I get $4K per year in tuition assistance and do not want to pay much/anything out of pocket. I guess it will take me another 3 - 3.5 years to complete so the total time would be 5.5 to 6 years.

As far as getting a job easily with degree, what job are oyu looking for? I have quite a bit of experience and don't plan to use the degree as the only thing to get a job/promotion.

    Hope this helps-

If you're Christian (or don't object to a Christian environment), there's Liberty University and Regent University, each of which is a brick and mortar institution with a distance EdD with short residencies.

There's also the University of South Africa, where one can do a Doctor of Education remotely -- and extremely inexpensively. If that interests you, you may wish to contact Michael Esselin, their red tape cutting North American agent, who has his own web site.

Thank you for the positive feedback about NCU; the new building is certainly a step in the right direction. I am mostly concerned about the wiki entry and its claims about SCUPS and Dr. Hecht. There are always two sides to every story and I wonder what the other side has to say about that.

    Steve,

Thank you for the links. I don't think I want to go with UNISA but I'll check into the other two.

    Again, the feedback is appreciated.

I can't deny the rumors of the SCUPS/NCU issue but that is long past. As far as the wiki entry, I don't give a lot of weight to that. Are they really experts in DL? I can also find websites that say we never landed on the moon. ;)

New Mexico State offers a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Learning Technologies

I think Feilding Graduate Institute also offers an EdD with short residencies.

    Hi Randell.

    Hi Randell,
Are you saying you take these classes to get a Dr degree? I would like to get that and yes, I hope to find a job, such as counseling or something that involves being around patients. I just figure that it will be easier with a Dr degree, rather than a Master's degree. Don't you agree?

Thank you all for the good websites.

    Re: Hi Randell.

I am getting a PhD so my title would be Dr. but my degree will be in business admin.

Have you given Nova Southeastern (www.nova.edu) a look? They are pretty big in the short residency market.

    Regards - Andy

Thank you tmartca, Andy and friartuck! I'll take a closer look at those schools this weekend. Nova certainly seems to have a lot of degree options available.

    Thanks again,

Susanna, there a probably many universities in the UK that would allow you to pursue a PhD or EdD with minimal residency.

These universities probably consider 1 month/year as meeting residency requirements for a part-time student. Some may want more, some may want less.

One thing I can say for sure is that it's best to find out what universities specialise in your area of research and then approach them. You'll find that they are open to negotiation when it comes to these issues.

Also, doctorates in the UK are research-based. This means that you may not have to complete any coursework. This, however, depends on your bachelors and masters-level preparation.

According to "The Times Good Universities Guide" the ranked UK universities that offer research in the field of education are as follows:

    1. Oxford
    2. Cambridge
    3. Bristol
    4. Aberdeen
    5. East Anglia
    6. Stirling
    7. Staffordshire
    8. Manchester
    9. Warwick
    10. Exeter
    11. Sheffield
    12. Sussex
    13. King's College
    14. Edinburgh
    15. Newcastle
    16. Bath
    17. Cardiff
    18. Dundee
    19. Durham
    20. Glasgow
    21. Cantebury Christ

The top few might not allow "external research", but the rest might. I would get in touch with their faculties of education and send an e-mail.

    Good luck!

While this is an interesting thread about alternative programs, I think your concerns about finishing your Ph.D. at TUI are somewhat whimsical. Please send me a private message with your email address and I'll add you to the TUI Ph.D. discussion list.

    Yeah, you're probably right!

For me, there is nothing worse than not being prepared. I hate being broad-sided and scrambling to finish whatever the task maybe... I am not just researching this in case TUI is sold to some institution that I don't respect; I am also researching it for future reference as I love online study. I think I am a student-lifer

I'll send you my email address,
    thanks Dave,
