She's trapped!

This week I had a discussion with a few co-workers who are in DL classes. As it turns out, one of my co-workers (Tammy), has gotten herself trapped in four pretty difficult classes this semester. She had two classes during the summer and found them easy, so she dove into four this time around.

That was a mistake. She stayed in the classes past the withdrawal date and now she's trapped.

She said she considered dropping a class or two before the deadline and she didn't, so now she's stressed to the max. She should have followed her instinct, I guess.

Different schools have different policies, but at the U. of Florida, the drop deadline is the date on which you can drop the course without receiving a W on your transcript. In fact they allow you to withdraw from a class pretty much up to the final exam with the approval of the department. There might be a limit on how many times you can do this, but I know it can be done. She should check to see if her university has a similar policy.

Also, in the future please mention the name of the university along with your question. Its quite possible that others here have attended the same institution and may be able to comment on the ins and outs based on first hand experience.

Have her call her advisor and to ask them if she can drop. More than likely she will be able to drop - with a "W" on her transcript. If she's getting federal financial aid, they will probably ask her to return some of the money - if she is getting financial aid next semester and there is an excess amount, they would take it from the excess amount. Better to drop a couple than to fail all.

True. I once had to drop a University of Nebraska writing class, the professor was a mad man! I explained this to somebody in admissions, and they basically said there had been other complaints against him. Anyway, they refunded most of my money even though the withdrawal date had passed. Tell her to call the school.

BTW Faxinator, welcome back from your trip! Hope you had fun.

    I know what she's going thru :)

I'm taking 4, but wanted to take 2 and couldn't (Int'l student, have to take at least 12 credit hours); of course I've been away on business for 2 weeks, am going away again (extremely limited internet access where I'm going) and to top it all off, we're moving across the country in five weeks.... this semester I'll be happy if I just pass my courses - but so much for keeping my GPA up :-(

Tell her to keep her to keep her stick on the ice, it'll be tough but she'll make it!

Most schools have a drop with no record period and a drop with W period. Drop with W is no big deal as long as it's not a regular thing and that date is usually well into a semester and after the mid-term.

Generally, there is no refund on a W drop.

I'll let her know to check. She asked me not to name the school she's attending (not sure why, but she wanted me to put a warning in my blog about her situation but not to name the school).

In any case, I know she can't get a refund so she'll lose the tuition if she drops now. She may still have to do it and take a "W" and lose the money. I'll give her your advice.

    Thanks, guys!
