Has anyone have any direct experience and/or links in the preparation of an "Experiential Learning Portfolio" that may assist me in gaining credit for up to 3 classes? Thanks!!

The Prior Learning Assessment, or Experiential Learning Portfolio, at Thomas Edison State College is explained in sufficient detail at the provided URL. Beware though the cost of PLA is the same as taking an actual course through Thomas Edison State College. I am considering two PLAs despite the expense just to wrap-up the degree.

Thanks, this would be for up to 3 classes of a masters program at CSU. Just FYI, a masters level class at CSU runs $720.00, but a PLA just $300 so it's worth the time investment.

    THANKS!!!

Please contact me via pm...I supplied an experiential learning portfolio as part of my undergraduate training. I will be happy to share the strategy I employed.

    Kind regards,

    Hi Brian,

When you refer to CSU, I'm assuming you're talking about Columbia Southern University.

If my assumptions are accurate, I'm providing you with the appropriate links on the CSU website pertaining to the Prior Learning Portfolio:

    http://www.columbiasouthern.edu/Student_Services/portfolio.htm

    http://www.columbiasouthern.edu/downloads/PPA.pdf

I have personal experience and success in obtaining PLP credits through CSU. I would almost recommend taking the class itself, but if you feel as though you've gained the knowledge and experience within a particular class then go for it. The PLP is a long and laborious process and not easy to achieve.

Thanks for the reply, and you have assumed correctly.

I took a look at the MS level classes for CJA and gave a quick assessment against my 25 years in law enforcement, my new BS, and all of the many, many, many in-service classes I have taken at the local college and figured that I would give (at least one) try in attaining course credit.

I realize that there will be work to do, but saving $420.00 per class (times 3) is my incentive.

Thanks for the links and insights!!

    Brian,

Excellent, it sounds like you've got the background and credentials to prove your PLP on the particular classes you've selected.

My recommendation, follow the PLP guidelines to the letter and dont' deviate from it in any way. Follow the instructions exactly and I'm confident you'll do just fine.

Welcome to CSU. Please keep us updated on your progress. You'll also find me on the CSU student forum. I'm currently the alumni president, so if I can assist you in any way please let me know.

    Thanks for the welcome Jamie!!

I'll be sending in my enrollment by Oct 15th, but I'm getting all my ducks in a row now and want to start with my head well above water.

    Thanks again!!

Check my previous post on the above. You may be able to get some credits through their Independent Study Experience credits. Hille
