    emergency administration and management

    thanks to both of you. this sounds great. probably what i have been looking for.

    would either of you be able to offer the differences between nationally and regionally accredited? which is best? sorry to seem so ignorant about the subject - i am a "late bloomer"

    While logic would dictate that "national" accreditation would be better than "regional", reality is that regional accreditation will be more useful under more conditions than will be national. You should read about the distinctions before you make a decision about a school.

    Jacksonville State University (RA) http://www.jsuonline.com has an online BS in Emergency Management with two possible minors, an MSc in Emergency Management, and an MPA with concentration in Emergency Management. (no associate's level) and their tuition is outstanding by most DL standards.

    APUS http://www.apus.edu (RA and NA) has several associates majors related to Emergency Management (counter-terorrism, explosive ordnance, fire science, haz. waste mgt, WMD) as well as bachelor's and master's degrees in Emergency and Disaster Management. There is an emergency management concentration in some of the other majors (such as public health) as well.

    Thomas Edison State College (TESC) has an Associate of Science in Public and Social Services with a major in Emergency Disaster Services as well as a Bachelor of Science in Human Services with a major in Emergency Disaster Services.

    I believe that St. Petersburg colleges offers a Bachelors in Public Safety Administration with concentrations in:
    * Emergency Administration and Management
    * Emergency Medical Services
    * Fire Science
    * Law Enforcement
    * Corrections

    Re: emergency administration and management

    National and Regional accrediting agencies are both equally recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Administration. That said, Regional Accreditation will be accepted everywhere in every circumstance while National Accreditation will have its limitations. Most employers will accept NA, but not all. Many RA colleges will not accept NA transfer credit. In short, NA schools have their place and most run very good programs that would meet the needs of mot people, but RA is always the safer bet if you're looking for maximum utility.

    Pug,

    Your actually incorrect with the statement of "regional accreditation will be accepted everywhere in every circumstance." Regional accreditation also has it's limitations, whereas not every regional school will accept regional credits. Same hold true in the national accreditation arena as well. Classes are assessed on an individual basis and the academic soundness and rigor of the program. Accreditation in only one element of transfer acceptance.

    As for employers not accepting nationally accredited degree(s) these circumstances are few and far between. Military accepts NA; private sector companies accept NA; the FEDS accepts NA; international schools seek out NA accreditation for their DL programs.

    The two instances I've seen in limitations for NA is trying to secure a position in academia and for unknown/unjustified reasons Texas law enforcement does not accept NA. Again, no sound reasons for the non-acceptance, which is extremely ignorant.

    In regards to academia, I'm a DETC graduate and have secured a part-time teaching position for an online institution. So, I've now proved this theory as false. Securing a teaching position requires a combination of academic credentials and professional background.

    Remember too -- accreditors like the American Bar Association are national and not regional. Try to get admitted to the bar with an RA degree that is not also NA (ABA).

    There is a place for both.
