Red flags appear all over with such comments as:

The reality is that few colleges or universities recognize credits earned at other institutions.

and regarding what field of study you can pursue, they say:

    Pick your field!

And under "Traditional Programs, they have this odd indication that they are affiliated with the regionally accredited National University. They say:

Almeda College & University, with our affiliate National University, offers 45 graduate and undergraduate degree and 15 teacher credential and certificate programs in an innovative one-course-per- month format. Programs include business, technology, computers, education, human services, nursing, counseling, math, and the arts and sciences.

As to getting a degree through life experience:

Most applicants who qualify for enrolment at Almeda do so based on prior work or life experience. However, applicants who claim to be experts in a certain field but lack the requisite work experience or education are sometimes asked to validate their abilities through competency testing.

I find it interesting that they say that those who lack the requisite work experience are "sometimes" asked to validate it through testing. Apparently you can be lacking and sometimes not be asked to validate it, also.

The most interesting thing is this reference to National University. I wonder if they are aware of this.

And finally, how long will it take:

Once you are approved for a degree from Almeda, just like at a major college or university, it will take 7 to 10 business days to prepare your degree, student record, and other materials before they are shipped out to you via FedEx.

As to National, I emailed them last week regarding Almeda but have had no response.

Almeda claims Nevis incorporation, and an 'affiliation' with a Connecticut company which, not surprisingly, is called Almeda Educational Services.

The claimed accreditation by AOAEx is a major red flag and sufficient to raise suspicion about Trinity C&U's possible involvement. Reincorporation in Florida as a foreign company through an agent in Delray Beach is even more curious.

Wouldn't happen to be Brett Loebel, would it?

The American branch of the Trinity C&U empire has been very active lately, rearranging their operations after South Dakota suddenly became inhospitable.

Trinity C&U moving overnight to the Caribbean or wherever it claims to be, the emergence of the new Brown's International University and Degree Consultants suddenly trying to present the appearance of legitimacy. I wouldn't be surprised if the sudden appearance of Almeda College is part of that turmoil.

Perhaps the Spanish sounding name is a homage to their empire's founder Peel-Bayley over there in Malaga Spain.

BTW, Capitol University's website now says that it is under "new management".

No, it's done through a registered agent. However, one of the officers listed for Almeda turns out to have incorporated AOAEx in Florida last month, so there is now a channel available to those legitimate schools which might wish to contest their 'involuntary' accreditation by this, uh, agency.

Now that's an understatement, if ever I've read one. [IMG]

I have a translation of a document produced by what I believe is a quasi-governmental consumer affairs agency in Spain in which they request that Peel-Bayley desist in his promotion of TC&U. This took place in the early '90s, as I recall.

  6. News flash -- as of 4:28 p.m. October 4, 2001, the "traditional programs" page at http://www.almedacollege.com/trad_programs.html no longer mentions National University.

Actually, it no longer mentions traditional programs at all, really. It has something of a blurb about web based training and has links to INTERACTIVE WEB BASED TRAINING & LEARN ALL ABOUT MULTI LEVEL MARKETING!

I had emailed National U also and still haven't heard back, but I wonder if Bill's and my (and possibly other) emails didn't trigger a complaint from NU to AC.

helper: "How long can they get away with it?"

John: In the historical section of our Degree Mills book, we point out that diploma mills were active in western Europe in the 14th century . . . and that there was active traffic in forged and fake documents among the Merovingians in the 7th century.

So I guess a conservative answer would be: at least another 700 years or so.

I read in Bears guide that there are a few Diploma Mils
that call them self National University.

I don't think that there is a conection to the real one in California.
