I took a correspondence course called, "History 101: History of Western Civilization I" at the University of North Dakota. There were twelve written assignments, twelve multiple-choice quizzes, and three multiple-choice exams. One textbook was required which contained excerpts from primary source material. The written assignments consisted of writing a short description of terms and writing a short essay (200-500) in response to an essay question. The exams were easy. It took me about ten minutes to complete each exam.

I would not recommend this course. It was far too easy for me. The assignments, quizzes, and exams were easy. If this course had essay exams and term papers, then this course would be more challenging.

A course that is easy to one student might be challenging to another student. However, all things being equal if all you need is 3 credit hours in history the course seems to offer a good cost-benefit ratio for distance education.
