I wanted to give a summary of my experiences with the University of Florida’s graduate certificate program so far. I am into my second class and I had gotten an “A” in the first class.

I signed up for the program because I wanted to add a school with a powerful name to my resume and add a credential that has value. I also wanted something that was not too long so I could work on it while working on my PhD.

I found UF online certificate (thanks JoAnnP38) and signed up. The program is a 3 class / credit 9 graduate certificate in Healthcare Risk Management. One book covers all three classes and one instructor runs this new program. Dr Nanni is great and very helpful. I missed the final because I mixed up the dates and he told me that he will work with me to get it done by sending me the .doc version as opposed to the web based version I was supposed to take. He gives the students his cell phone number and answers emails within 24 hours.

The first class had several PowerPoint presentations on the website and six threaded discussions. The final project for the first class was to interview a risk manager and write a 10 page paper. I happened to interview a woman that had worked with Dr Nanni and used to teach risk management at another college – what great luck.

I have learned a lot and I will be done after three classes. Since I live just outside Tampa, it would not be uncommon for me to travel to UF for weekend classes. Anyone with a prejudice against online classes would never know unless they ask. Of course, I would tell them the truth.

Anyone interested in adding a strong name to his or her resume and learning about risk management, this one is great. There is also talk of making it a graduate degree program. The best part – tuition is only $780 per class.

If anyone has any questions, please ask. I just felt inclined to share this.

Thanks for posting, this is very interesting. Something like this would be ideal for a health care administrator with very limited time and money, or limited tuition reimbursement.
