I spoke with an advisor today who told me that they will accept D's in transfer (courses not exams and not English). Has anyone done this?

I had d's on my transcript and I had them taken off. You will be suprised how much they drag down your gpa. For myself taking another course to replace the d's was more than worth it.

I had no Ds on mine but my wife is leaving one on hers. She's poor at math but in her case 'D' is for Diploma

    :D

Good point Coach! One D isn't going to make or break anyones career. Even the University of Iowa(Big 10) accepts a D.

Accepting a "D" as real credit towards graduation? That would be nice. Is that what Excelsior does?

I know many schools that just leave off the bad grades when bringing in your grades from previous schools. For example, my transcript at Baker lists all As and Bs and does not mention my previous youthful transgressions back in the late 80s at community college.

But it can affect you later on if you have greater ambitions. When I applied to law school a few years back, LSAC (the makers of the LSAT and holders of all of your academic records for law school) submits a transcript to each school that averages your grades based on your entire history. Just something to keep in mind.

Many colleges transfer Ds -- very very few will list an F. But, most colleges use your academic GPA for determining honors.

It's not that some schools "just leave off bad grades" as much as their transfer policy doesn't accept "bad" grades. Coastal Carolina transferred credit for many of my courses with a C or better but didn't transfer any grades.

A "trick" some students with a bad first year use around here is to transfer to one of the state schools that won't accept Ds or Fs in transfer -- that way, their GPA magically improves in their junior year. The "trick" doesn't work all that well since most grad school apps. want "all transcripts"; but if you're staying at the same school for grad you can often slip it by...

Excelsior also allows a student to leave classes off their transcript. Very often this involves those courses with low grades -- sometimes though it's just an academic choice.

A D is a passing grade for most classes at most schools -- particularly in classes outside the major.
