    Hello all,

This is my first post, but I've been lurking for quite some time now. I recently enrolled at Troy University(so far so good), and was wondering did anyone here have any comments or suggestions about the Business program. My previous searches on Troy don't bring up anything specific to that program, mainly CS. I have about 89 credits from a previous 4 year institution, but I have to wait until second or third term for Troy to evaluate my transcript. I'm so nervous thinking about what credits may or may not be accepted. Sorry for rambling off subject, my main concern is getting any feedback on the Business program or even Troy's distance learning program in general.

    Thanks in advance!

Why on Earth do you have to wait until the second or third term to have your previous credits evaluated and transferred? This sort of thing is usually done right after you enroll. In fact, some colleges will give you a preliminary estimate of credit transfers before you even enroll. Why would you enroll in a class you may not have to take if it will transfer from another school? This does not make any sense at all, and I would have been hesitant to enroll in a school that would make me wait so long to indicate which of my previous courses would transfer.

Since you have already enrolled, I'm afraid you are now negotiating from a position of weekness. As the saying goes, you need to get this sort of thing in writing going into the program.

I never said I was taking a class that I may have already taken. I'm currently taking the University Orientation class that's required for all incoming students. Do you think that this is a scam, and I should be looking at another school?

I wasn't implying you were currently taking a class you have already taken. However without an evaluation of your previous credits, it is possible you would eventually be taking a class you may already have on your transcript from you other school. That is why you have a transcript evaluation and transfer your prior credits...so you avoid taking the same class twice. This should have been done before you even enrolled, or at the very least, immediately after enrolling. You certainly should not have to wait two or three terms.

Troy University has a good reputation, and I have never read a negative review of this school. I think you were either A) misinformed, or B) led astray by somebody in admissions who doesn't know what they are talking about. Of course, there may be something else happening here that I am not even aware of, but you should get a credit evaluation of your previous classes and arrange for their transfer immediately, not two or three semesters down the road.

I was under the impression by my advisor and other students that this was the norm for students with previous credit. This is the email I received from my advisor:

Your transcripts have been received. They will not be evaluated until your
second or third term with TROY. Please refer to the online degree plan to
determine what courses you have already taken at your previous school, and
to help decide what you will need to take next. I would suggest taking Troy 1101, which is a one-hour university orientation
class. Also, please try to take any general studies courses you have not
    already taken.

    Sincerely,

    Suzanne Stearns

If this is not the norm, should I cut my losses and apply to another school since I have only taken one class?

Unfortunately, it DOES take 2-3 terms for transfer credit evals to be completed at Troy (at least the online component of Troy University). I also experienced painfully slow responses to my e-mail inquiries and was never able to reach anyone with an answer to my basic enrollment questions by phone, I always got the "you need to talk to so-and-so and she's not available, call back later". After several attempts, along with problems with their online registration system, I was scared away and decided I could do much better elsewhere.

I don't blame you. I don't think I could put up with that bullshit. You are a paying customer after all!

    Good luck,

Make sure you check with your advisor prior to taking any courses until the transcript eval is done. You don't want to take a course that you already received credit for.

I think they might do a pre-lim but it has been several years since I submitted my transcripts and went through the process.

Troy took all of my credits from another university and what didn't match up I got free elective credits for. SO they took all of my credits and applied it to my degree. I did the option for 1 major - 1 minor and 18 free electives.
