I'm doing some research on American School, so I'm looking for some reveiws from anyone who attended or has had any experience with them.

What did you like/dislike about the school? How would you describe the courses they offered? How long did you take to complete the courses? How would you rate their service/curriculum/grading, etc? Overall, how would you describe your experience?

Also, has anyone taken the "comprehensive examinations" for homeschoolers to "establish up to 8 units of credit?"

    Thanks in advance,
    - Kate

My son is finishing up his highschool program with American School. I have been adequately impressed by the quality and content of the material. It is absolutely comparable to what you would find in a traditional classroom. Some of the classes were quite easy, like the core requirement of Choosing Your Career. I think he completed it in a few days. Others were considerably more difficult, like American and English Literature. Each of those classes took him about a month (working 4 hours a day on it). We don't have all of the exams back yet but it looks like he'll likely pull C's in each.

What I like: Quality of the material, instructors provide comments and assitance when returning exams, price, regional accreditation.

Dislikes: They are SLOW in grading and returning exams as well as shipping the next course in line. You should call and ask for another course to be shipped at least 2 to 3 weeks before you expect to need it. They are faster in grading the multiple choice exams, much slower in grading the essay-type exams.

Overall I like the program. The tests are open book, unproctored. We remove the tests from the study guides before giving them to our son so he can't look ahead. That's just our personal way of doing it. I prefer to have him study the material, do a review with us, then take the test. Otherwise I think he'd be too tempted to look at the test and then go searching for the answers.
