My wife took the CLEP test for French today and although her command of French is excellent, she scored just 52 (enough for six credit hours, but not the twelve for which she was hoping).

She said that the people they use for the listening section have strange Quebecois accents, and that as a result she wasn't always able to understand them at first. She thought she'd have done better had they used Parisian speakers.

I just thought anyone considering the French CLEP might want to know. I suppose Canadians would find this to be good news. :)

..even in Canada there are different dialects (Acadian french, Quebecois French..) :)

Next year I'll do the German Clep to get the language thing out of the way, I'll let yas know then what its like :)

hey , that would really look impressing for a language credit to be scored into your transcript even if it is in an excelsior or another school 's list ....

    that would be impressive...

Unless one was educated in an English Quebec school, where one is (or at least was) taught "French French".

Over the years this has lead to me being mocked for my "pretty French".

I suck at German grammar but don't have any problems understanding (reading or listening) it. That's what happens when you try to learn German in Switzerland, where everyone speaks Swiss-German...

Anyways, I took the German CLEP without any study. I was planning on taking a couple DSSTs but the proctor forgot to order them... so instead of wasting the 5 hour round trip I decided to give it a try. I got a 75 and it was the easiest 12 credits in my life... 12 credits, thats 1/10 of a Bachelors!

Just remember, it's multiple choice, no essay, no speaking... 12 easy language credits... at least compared to doing 2 years of college language courses.
