    All,

I've decided to go ahead and get a Certificate in Homeland Security and have narrowed it down to two programs.

First I looked at Texas ATM, but discovered it would be about $11,000 in state tuition.......which I cannot afford.

Second I looked at http://homelandsecurity.msu.edu/ At Michigan State for about $3,000

and lastly I looked at http://www.cup.edu/ilpp/certificate_in_homeland_security.htm
California University of Pennsylvania which is about $1,000.00

Which would you guys choose and is the name recognition with Michigan State worth $2,000? I know they have a top notch Criminal Justice program, but Cal U of Penn is still RA school.....

    Any suggestions?

As a side note, I did check out APUS.....but they are the same price as MSU....which is a no brainer.

Programs are too new to have "name" recognition - unless you do it thru a service school - which wouldn't actually be any better - but people would think it was.

    Whoops........I miscalculated MSU......it's over $7,000.

Looks like Cal U of Penn........what a weird name.

Wrong again, MSU is only 3 classes, I read it to be six. Thus it is about $3500.

Actually, the reason for the "wierd name" is that there is a city of California in the state of Pennsylvania ... and a city of Indiana in the state of Pennsylvania ... and both have universities ... hence California University of Pennsylvania and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Many states have cities that are the same names as other states.

    It could be worse...

Pennsylvania also has the town of Intercourse and the town of Blue Ball. Imagine those names attached to your transcripts. ;)

    Intercourse, PA

    Blue Ball, PA

    I almost forgot Climax, PA.

Now you have a place for your bachelors, masters, and doctorate.

Oh, by the way, I happen to be a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. And yes people do get confused about Indiana being in Pennsylvania. :D

I am working my way towards a graduate a “Certificate in Homeland Security” at Michigan State University. The program is good, and I feel it is a good value for the money.

Carlos, if you don't mind me asking you, about how much did it cost?

What is the learning format...for example, do you write research papers, etc?

How long does it take to complete? How difficult is the coursework? How supportive are the instructors? etc.

    Hi friendorfoe

I am sorry it took me this long to answer you. The course grade is based on research papers, and online discussions participation. The courses are very demanding, however I feel very satisfy with the instruction. The instructor I have for this particular course is Professor Rad Jones and he does know the subject of Emergency Management very well. I can recommend this training to everyone interested. The cost for the certificate is about a thousand per class and requires three classes for a total of about three thousand. If you need more information let me know.

    Carlos
