I know I saw this question discussed prior but I can't find the thread. What has more utility, a 2nd masters from a state university or a DBA from an online only school such as NCU or TUI? I am looking more toward teaching at the conclusion of the program at an online school rather than a B & M. My first graduate degree (MBA) is from an online RA school. Any benefit to getting a second masters, such as an MA or MS, from a more recognized state university? Thanks

This is a good question....one that I've pondered as well.

If it were me, I'd go for the DBA (or PhD) instead of the additional Masters degree...unless the 2nd masters is something that hits a completely different area. I think the doctorate would provide more utlity for being an online adjunct...especially now that there are quite a few with Masters degrees jockeying for positions as online adjuncts.

The additional questions to ask yourself are:

1.) What will the 2nd masters do for your non-teaching career? If a Masters from a well-known B&M would provide a great deal of benefit/value in your current career, it may put the Masters over the DBA in terms of utility.

2.) Will you ever get the "itch" to teach full time? If so, you might want to consider a doctorate from Nova or a UK/Auz/South Africa program.

I agree with Eric. Unless the Masters is in a Totally different field, go for the doctorate. Even at the community college level, a doctorate with work experience is becoming a preferred qualification.

The second master's would be a good idea only if the two were majoring in separate subdisciplines (e.g., entrepreneurship and marketing). If you're looking at someday becoming a full-time tenured professor, Nova www.nova.edu would be a wise choice for the doctorate. Of course, if you've got enough money and enough lifetime left, you could always do both.

All depends on the subject you want to teach. You typically need 18 graduate credit hours from a single subject.

I would go for the DBA, but why does it have to be from an "online school"? Get a DBA from a respected B&M school that allows external research. Aston, Grenoble, Manchester, etc...

Does it really have to be online? I ask because you're in Central Pennsylvania, and Penn State has a PhD in Business Administration.
