Good Morning, I am helping a student that is considering the testing option for his BA. He has gifted intellect so I am guessing he could test through easily. Examples appreciated.

Unless he is incredibly exceptional, I'd not get him too confident that he can "test through easily."

My experience has been that many people who embark on the test out option fail to complete because they went in thinking this option is somehow easier than the traditional method. Even for the most well read, putting 16 weeks of Macro-economics into a 2 hour exam covering material that you only have an outline of is challenging.

That said, one resource for him would be the program catalog of any of the Big Three. If you take a look at the Excelsior BA Liberal Arts for example, you'll find a specific pattern of coursework that must be completed. If the student can't comprehend where American History before 1860 fits into that program or if he can't see a requirement for natural science with lab and determine for himself what courses will meet that requirement, then he is going to face a major obstacle going this route.

Many potential students going this route want to be handed a defined curriculum that says "take test A then take test B..."; the needs and knowledge base of the variety of students prohibits such an example. Simply meeting the written English requirement at Excelsior has at least 5 options.

    just a few thoughts....
