I have a question-- I would like to get a BA/BS in psychology, but to pursue a career in psychology, I'm going to need to go to grad school. I would like to go to a school with a good reputation that will not hinder my opportunities for grad school. I would like grad school to not be a distance learning school. So what distance learning undergrad schools are good? I definitely want not for profit, and definitely accredited, of course, so I need a little help. I thought UMUC would be good, becuase it's connected to University of Maryland, but I read some bad stuff about it. Which schools are good?

    Thanks!

    Snowcow,

See my response to your other question, as it covers both your questions.

There are many past threads here that discuss undergrad education quality as it relates to getting into grad school. Use the search function.

    Good luck!

I did not think UMUC and University of Maryland were connected. I got my BS from Charter Oak and was accepted into California State University's grad program.

If grad school is the target, what grad school are you looking at? It is best to know and make sure youmeet the pre-reqs.

Just curios about one thing - why is it important that the school be non-profit?

I actually thought that they were connected. It's called University of Maryland University College, and they're always talking about the UNiversity of Maryland system and such. It's my mistake, I suppose, but I don't know how I would have known otherwise. I feel like a not for profit school would be more interested in the education, as opposed to just the money. I don't want to go somewhere where I just have to pay for it, and the degree will basically be handed to me. I don't have any specific university in mind for grad school, only that I know when I go, I'll go full time, and it won't be a distance learning degree. I just need to get past this one step while leaving as many options open as possible.

Any RA school with the pre-req classes for grad school should work.

University of Maryland University College and University of Maryland College Park are two separate campuses of the University of Maryland System.

I live here in maryland. I once thought UMUC was connected to the University of maryland but it isn't. UMUC is a network of assorted Maryland RA schools. That said, any solid RA school should meet your needs. If you don't want to go the Excelsior/Thomas Edison/Charter Oak route, look at FHSU, Liberty, Bellevue, etc.

UMUC is a stand-alone institution. UMUC (and UMCP, UMB among others) are part of the University System of Maryland .

So UMUC is regionally accredited, so it should be okay, right?

Yes, UMUC is RA and will be fine. It's just not part of the University of Maryland, if that mattered to you.

Sure it is -- it has as much right to the phrase "University of Maryland" as the eponymous institutions in Baltimore, Baltimore County, and College Park. Think UCLA relative to UCSD -- both are called "University of California" but they're different institutions.

    Hi,

If your looking for a school with an excellent reputation (and an online presence), check out Drexel University. Drexel is a Tier 1, regionally accredited (middle states) school located in Philadelphia, PA. They are starting up a new online BS degree in Psychology in the Fall. I have just enrolled. The school is on the Quarter credit system.

    Tuition will run you $420/credit.

BTW, don't worry about their .com address, as this is for their online programs. They also have a ".edu" address to their on campus programs.

    Good luck.

Steve's right. I worked for the USM. THere are actualy 5 "Universities of Maryland":

University of Maryland College Park (UMCP) [This is the main "flagship" school that everyone associates with being THE University of Maryland]
University of Maryland University College (UMUC)
University of Maryland At Baltimore (UMAB)
University of Maryland Baltimmore County (UMBC)
University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES)

Each diploma says "University of Maryland" and the designated campus.
