More news on Excelsior taking NA credits....

Since the other thread has begun to go off topic somewhat, I decided to start a new thread. I wrote to Excelsior to inquire about my specific situation and received the following reply:

"Beginning July 1, Excelsior College will institute a new procedure for the consideration of credit from non-regionally accredited degree-granting institutions in the United States. To qualify, institutions must be approved by the US Department of Education, and hold either professional or national accreditation, as verified by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). The two institutions that you have attended,
Ashworth College and California Coast University, meet these
qualifications, as they are nationally accredited (by DETC), so I would encourage you to pursue this process.

The process involves having each of the two institutions that you attended verify that three regionally accredited institutions have accepted their credits. We will then contact these institutions, and the information that we receive from them will be reviewed by a faculty committee that will make a decision regarding the awarding of credit.

There will be a $200 fee for each institution reviewed through this
process. The fee will be applied toward your enrollment, if you
matriculate in Excelsior College within a year after the review process is completed."

 

Is this just Liberal Arts BA's or do they offer BS in Business the same way?

 

Has EC established a list yet or will they make you jump through hoops??

 

I'm assuming that this is for all of their programs. They didn't put any conditions on it in their response to my email. I was considering the B.S. in Business, General Business Program.

Does anyone know how many credits you can transfer into Excelsior? I've been reading a lot of the material online but haven't come across that info yet.

Edited to add: I don't know what hoops you are talking about. I emailed them with the two schools I attended and got a specific reply very quickly. I'm sure others can do the same, however, it sounds as though any DETC school's credits will transfer as long as they fit in with the conditions in the email quoted above.

 

you can transfer in 100% of your credit in.. you can get your degree from excelsior and and don't have to take any classes from them

Back in May I asked if I could use Penn Foster/Education Direct English Composition course to satisfy my written english requirement.


At the time I was told the school had to be regionally accredited or that the course had to be evaulated by ACE.

On your admissions page it know states that you accept naional accreditation. Has the schools policy changed, If so will I know be able use Penn Fosters English Comp course to fulfill my written english requirement?

We will be accepting non-regionally accredited transcripts starting July 1st. As this is a new process for the college, I don't have all of the specific information for you yet. I will let you know when I get all of the detailed information.

 

Wow, that's not going to be hard. University of Phoenix, AIU, and Kaplan should work for any CHEA recognized school out there. One wonders why they even bothered with that policy.

 

What are the total fees involved (B.A.) to attend Excelsior? By that I mean matriculation fees, etc. Let's assume 100% coursework was transferred in. Please advise,

Total fees at Excelsior will vary from person to person. Assuming that you could transfer in 100% of a degree (not an easy accomplishment) and have to take no tests and no classes -- simply the annual fee and a graduation fee:

A BA/BSc from Excelsior College would cost about :
Enrollment Fee $995
Graduation Fee $495
================
$1,490

That said, few people are 100% complete when they enroll. You should expect to at least have to meet the Information Literacy requirement ($250) and to take some number of classes or exams to complete.

This is extremely similar to what I was told as well. I assume they will keep a list of NA colleges that have been approved so that later students transfering from those schools can pay the $200 fee and be fast tracked through the process.

With the advent of EC accepting course credit from NA schools now, does anyone have any good information about a BASIC MATH course that would fit the bill as in: EASY, CHEAP, MINIMAL LESSONS, NO EXAMS, NON-PROCTURED..?????

 

A UoP math class would fit all of those EXCEPT cheap. Why don't you study for the General Math CLEP? It is cheap and easy.

 

Been there - done that, it was cheap......

I think posting a reply and labeling it as being lame is just that – lame.

I do not need to justify myself to you, but know that of the 123 credits that I have amassed, I have only failed at math; it is my Achilles heel but that’s better than having diarrhea of the mouth.

That was a bit harsh!

Can you say "Course Work"? For anyone who gets stressed out by timed math exams (me included), an opportunity to prove your knowledge of the material in other ways is preferable.

Math anxiety is a real issue for MANY people. Being unable to perform a calculation within 15 seconds under exam conditions doesn't necessarily prove that you can't do the calculation. It only proves that you cannot do the calculation within 15 seconds, under exam conditions.

Doing a timed math exam for someone with math anxiety is similar to being asked to write a five page essay in five minutes! It's not a fair evaluation of your knowledge. The time limitation will hinder your ability to effectively prove what you really know.

Therefore, there HAS to be an alternative means of measuring the math ability of someone with math anxiety. Evaluation of Course Work is the perfect solution to this particular problem!

I totally understand why ShotoJuku would look for a source of credit that would be based on what he has actually learned, rather than how fast he can solve problems under extreme stress.

It seems like a logical strategy to me.
