Independent Study Pre-reqs...

How diligent are various schools in requiring proof of completion of prerequisite courses before allowing students to enroll in non semester-based, independent study courses?

I am interested in several graduate, independent study courses at several different schools and I wanted to see if anyone on the forum had any experiences to share.
