I have searched for this type of information for quite some time, and I have noticed several posts on this board from people inquiring about a PhD in history through a US brick and mortar school.

Well I ran across one good prospect and one possible prospect today. I am currently working on my MA via DL through the University of West AL and had looked into Sam Houston State for the MA. Now it sems SHSU is requesting approval from the TX Board of Regents to begin a PhD program through DL.

The second ray of hope comes from Kansas State University, though it seems farther in the future.

American Military University is still letting the dust settle from having been granted regional accredication, but evidently a PhD in history is one of the things they would like to be able to offer.

Posts about PhDs in History through brick & mortar schools? I've never seen such. Could you post the threadlinks? Thanks for the heads up on Sam Houston State and K-State and their proposed DL PhDs. The only DL PhD in History in the US at this time is the Union Institute www.tui.edu , though there might be a new DL PhD in History through the newly RA American Military University www.apus.edu by 2007 or 2008. SHSU does seem like a viable possibility; they used to have a B&M PhD in History as of 1984, according to one of my very old Peterson's Guides (yes, I know, I'm dating myself), though I forget when that got eliminated.

Wow. I had not even heard this. Wow. In my own backyard. Sam Houston is 70 miles to the north of me. And by DL. Wow. That would certainly give students in this area another option. Right now it is UH and Rice.

Ok here is part of the scope. They (SHSU) will make a big announcement later this summer. It will be totally online (2 classes each semester (Fall, Summer, Spring). There will be a two week residency in Huntsville in the summer. That is all I know.
