I've enrolled in two LSU independent study classes (POLI 2051 American Government and MATH 1021 College Algebra) and I just received my class materials in the mail today.

I must say, I'm very impressed with the package provided and think this will be a terrific experience for me. I like the self-paced nature of the courses, and which will allow me to work these classes in with my current three-class load at SPC.

And at $229 per credit, its nearly as inexpensive as my local schools here in Florida.

If anyone was toying with the idea of getting some of their credits through LSU, so far from what I have seen I can recommend their IS program heartily.

I have done that, but dropped out. Be honest, the tuition is very cheap for Four Year institution. The only thing I don't like is Independent Study due to procastination... I like distance learning, but must have a specific time frames.

Most of the instructors at LSU have good attitude toward students. And I like the way they make some of correction in the assignment.

That's my two cents for LSU.

I think you meant to say $229.00 per 3 credit class. Just want to clarify.

Right, $229 per course, not per credit.

    Oh, Inflation!

    $229 a course is good.

I have a friend who is finishing his MSW at the University of Washington next week and he is taking a LSU correspondance class for his last foundation course- human biology. He says it's great.

I just remember that, as a UW undergrad in the early 80s, I paid $229 for 15 credits (full time course-load).

I remember it well, because I had to save, in advance, $25 a week times 10 weeks of the quarter in order to have enough money to pay the next quarter's tuition and books. I was putting myself through school, working full time and had no parent support and did it without loans.

It was hard, but very worth it. I'm not sure that it would be possible to do it with today's prices.

That Algebra class was looking right up my alleyway, until I noticed that it had prerequisite classes.

How did you get around that?

When you sign up for the class, there is a small box, no larger than the subject line entry field for posting on this forum, where you are supposed to list how you fulfilled the prerequisite.

In my case, I listed the math class I took 25 years ago at Hillsborough Community College. I simply wrote: "MGF-XXXX Hillsborough Community College" in the box.

A day later I received an e-mail saying that I was accepted into both of the classes I signed up for (American Gov't had no prerequisite, so there was little doubt there).

I didn't have to supply a transcript of any sort, so it would appear that they took my word for it. Of course, your mileage may vary.

How do you take exams with LSU? Do they require a Proctor? Do they have independent study without a proctored exam?

The two classes I'm taking require two proctored exams, a mid-term and a final.
