This little number has announced itself on AED, http://www.goldcoastuniversity.net/ Bears' Guide has a listing for a similarly named, defunct school. Imagine, a two day old university with 1800 students. [IMG]

    The domain is registered to:
    Medwed, Todd (GOLDCOASTUNIVERSITY-DOM)
26003 Alizia Canyon Drive Unit B
    Calabasas, CA 91302
    US

Mr. Medwed, according to the information at http://www.mobilecoders.com/profile/overview.asp?id=1978 does a little pocket PC programming, and now appears to have added a sideline.

The wording on his web site looked so familiar that a little digging revealed that much, if not all, of it has been 'borrowed' from Barrington. Make the comparison at http://www.barrington.edu/body.asp

How soon before someone rents a mail box on the island of St. Pierre (French territory off the coast of Canada).

I can see it now, the University of Saint Pierre. A Ph.D. in Oceanography. They were at one point making extravagant claims of territorial water for a couple of little islands the size of pin pricks. Unfortunately, Canada could not do much other than huff and puff (don't want a war with France). It was similar to when the US sent a sub through our Northwest Passage claiming it was international water. We sent a Coast Guard helicopter and had an officer hold a sign out of an open door saying "These are Canadian waters". We are so darned orderly and polite!

The US had the rallying cry "Give me Liberty or give me death".

We had "Law and Good Government" as we met in committee to figure out Confederation in 1867.

It is late & I am rambling [IMG]

On its FAQ page, Gold Coast calls itself "a licensed institution". It's main page includes these words:

But strangely, I was unable to find an address for this thing anywhere on their website. However the 818 telephome prefix listed is consistent with Mr. Medwed's address in Calabasas.

Given that, I looked up Gold Coast with the BPPVE and found no record of them. So Gold Coast is not "licensed" or approved to operate in California.

My impression is that this thing is an amateurish one-man operation.

Wow, what a piece of work. No faculty names, "recommended" but not required texts, the link for buying books appears above the link to descriptions of degree programs . . .

Its already happened, North! Actually, the program was begun at 9:00 am this morning. I am already negotiating with the university for a Ph.D. in Ocean Archaeology.
The only requirements stipulated by the university are: 3 scuba diving trips (with snorkel), and a 12 page dissertation.

I should be through by Sunday, and I know my parisioners will be proud of my accomplishment. [IMG]

    Dear North,

Hmmm...to avoid all of these problems, I will settle for the University of Miquelon.

    Sincerely yours,

P.S.: Miquelon is the sister island of St. Pierre.

I glanced at the text books for the MSCS degree and found it amusing that they appear to be undergraduate texts. No big surprise, it's just intended to be a humorous note.

I often wonder how these phonies market themselves. This morning, a reader sent me the following by Email. Notice the newsgroup where it appeared. I wonder if they know that the demographics match their clients, or do they advertise on "breasts, large" as well.

Perhaps it should have been alt.brain.small instead. [IMG]

On a side note, I saw a book at B&N tonight entitled "Tuva or Bust," which was about one of Richard Feynman's last journeys, one to obtain a very rare postage stamp.

GCU's site has been unavailable for several days now, possibly rivaling the defunct UNCAS of last year in rapidity of disappearance.

If any of Barrington's people read this forum, I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that they took issue with the significant amount of plagiarism that was evident in GCU's material. My pet theory, however, would be that Mr. Medwed realized he had a small problem tax-wise. 1800 students at $450 per enrollment makes a hefty sum. [IMG]
