Some kind soul in this forum mentioned the possibility of doing a Ph.D. from the Open University in a theology-related field from the United States, via an intermediary college. A family friend might be interested in this option, and I might be interested in knowing about any such programs in religion or religious studies. Is there a directory of OU-approved institutions that offer its Ph.D. nonresidentially?

    Thanks for any leads.

BTW- I really do appreciate the massive amount of research certain people in this forum have been undertaking in the general field of theology-by-distance learning (CSeibel deserves special kudos for virtually mapping the entire country of South Africa). It's a wonderful thing to see.

Tom, thank you most sincerely for your kind compliment. I find great pleasure and satisfaction in researching about distance learning, and am thrilled to participate in a forum like this where we can contribute to one another's journeys.

I was the one who made mention of doing Open University doctorates through validated institutions. To find a list of Open University-accredited institutions offering supervision of doctoral research, follow this link: http://www.open.ac.uk/validate/
Then, click on the "Accredited Institutions" link you'll find near the bottom of your screen along the left-hand margin. When you click on the "Accredited Institutions" link, you'll be taken to a list of schools. Scroll down a bit, and you'll notice a collection of institutions under the heading (on the left-hand margin) "research degrees." While I'm uncertain about specific institutions offering PhD research in religious studies, I know of many that are welcoming US students into Open Univ. PhD's in theology, missions, and other Christian disciplines, including Highlands Theological College, All Nations Christian College, International Christian College, Oxford Centre for Mission Studies, St. John's College, Nottingham (I believe). The catch is that some of these schools will require a week or two in residence each year. This may or may not prove to be the case with other schools you investigate. I encourage you to work your way through the list provided in search of one that might offer something in Religious Studies.

    Good luck!
