Is anyone familiar with a college or colleges that gives credit for the practical coursework and certifications for police officers? Most colleges offer a lot of theory courses which I took years ago. But there must be some colleges out there that award college credit for in-service certifications. For instance, I took an 80 hour FBI police firearms instructor course. I've also been certified (40 Hours) as a Use of Force instructor. I've attended a 24 hour Patrol Rifle Instructor school and recently completed a 40 hour FTO school. Any ideas or first hand experiences would be appreciated. thanks Jeff
Most of those courses are probably too short to receive any credit for. I received 2 hours from Indiana University for my 40 hour class to become a certified alcohol breath test administrator, but that was probably because the course was taught by staff from the Indiana University School of Medicine. I also received several credits from IU for completion of my state law enforcement academy, as well as for my training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. I believe I only received credits for FLETC because the program had been evaluated by ACE. Perhaps you could get some credits via assessment through TESC?
Try to find a local community college that has a Criminal Justice division. Chances are, you may find someone to help you out, or at least "point you in the right direction." I got 15 hours credit for my police academy training almost 20 years after the fact. A short interview with the dean and my certification in hand, was all it took. As the previous poster said, it may also help if you can find a CC that teaches the particular certs for which you are hoping to get credit. Good luck.
Excelsior CJTA Jhatz, Excelsior has a program called Criminal Justice Training Assessment (CJTA). As I understand it the program is set up as a way for law enforcement departments to transition their training credits into university credits. From what I have seen the majority of the training credits transition into lower level credits and there are not a large number of programs that have been assessed by Excelsior. But from what I read it looks like there is a path for setting up an assessment if your particular department is not on the list. I looked into this program for a young man that was struggling with finishing his senior year at a B&M CJ university but because of most of the courses translate into LL credit he could not take advantage of the program. Other than this I have no personal experience with the program. The link to the program is here: Excelsior CJTA
It has been about three years... but I remember seeing an advertisement in LAPD's union magazine that Union Institute and University <http://www.tui.edu> had a program where they evaluated police academies and experience for undergraduate college credit. Now my memory might be a little off on some of the particulars but a quick email to them for info should flush out the facts.
